Josh Groban was born to a schoolteacher mother & a Jewish businessman father in Los Angeles in 1981. His father later converted to Christianity. Groban first started singing on stage in seventh grade. Rapidly developing a fondness for theatrical performances, he majored in Music Theater & began taking vocal lessons from trainer Seth Riggs. He was admitted into Carnegie Mellon University & was about to begin studying theater when Riggs sent a recording of his “All I Want is You” (from Phantom of the Opera) to his friend, producer, composer & arranger David Foster. Foster was suitably impressed, & asked Groban to fill in as rehearsal singer for the ailing Andrea Bocelli in a duet the latter was supposed to perform with Celine Dion at the 1999 Grammys. The performance got many tongues wagging, & Groban was invited to the Rosie O’ Donnell Show, performed at the California Governor’s inauguration, & even landed a popular role on Ally McBeal within weeks of the event. Leaving Carnegie four months into his first semester, he accepted a recording contract by Warner Bros through Foster’s 143 Records imprint. Impressing one & all with his live renditions of stirring classics & bouncy pop, Groban released an eponymous debut album in 2001. It enjoyed a thunderous reception, & Groban’s more intimate multi-lingual follow-up Closer was also very warmly received. Groban has also produced various covers & worked with the likes of vocal group Ladysmith Black Mambazo & jazz artist Herbie Hancock. His most successful year came in 2007 with his fourth album Noel, yet he has definitely packed a punch with the Americana-influenced latest release Illuminations, which is produced by the famous Rick Rubin. Groban has also expressed interest at performing on Broadway & is cast in an upcoming film titled Crazy, Stupid, Love. Groban goes lower than tenor at the low & higher than baritone on the high end.

The double-platinum Josh Groban was massive because of “You’re Still You” (#10) & “To Where You Are” (#1). 2004’s Closer was certified 4xPlatinum in the US, with the platinum single “You Raise Me Up” going on to top charts, & “Believe” winning a Grammy & getting an Oscar nomination. The third album, Awake, was certified 2xPlatinum, yielding a top ten hit in “You Are Loved”. The 2007 holiday-themed Christmas album Noel became history’s fourth best-selling holiday album, topping sales of all 2007 albums with its Quintuple Platinum certification.
