Butler was born in a poor family in Cape Town and was the youngest of the thirteen children. His life growing up was very tough as he had to deal with many different problems all at once. He had to work hard to get ahead in life and that’s what he did but still found it extremely daunting due to the political situation in South Africa. He did however possess a special talent for singing and songwriting which he embraced at a very early age. So much so that he performed his first live song at the age of six and left the audience amazed with his rendition of Tom Jones classic hit ‘Delilah.’
He received an exciting offer to tour around the country and even got the chance to record his first song. A fan of legends like Stevie Wonder, Butler knew this was his opportunity to announce himself to the country. The road trips were a success and he followed that up with the release of his first album. It was an instant hit garnering gold level sales in South Africa.
His cover of the Drifter’s song "Please Stay" managed to reach the number two spot in the South African song charts. Two more tracks from the album, "I Love How You Love Me” a cover of the Paris Sisters song and “I'll be Home" got to the number fourth and sixteenth spot respectively. As a testament to his fame, Butler’s first song also became the first track made by a member of the black community to be played on national radio.
In 1977 Butler joined Jive Records and released his first album ‘Introducing Jonathan Butler’ to critical and popular acclaim. He had perfected his guitar playing by this time and much focus was put on instrumental music than his vocals in the album. Butler managed to win the Sarie Award, an equivalent of the Grammy Awards in South Africa, for Introducing Jonathan Butler.
During the eighties Butler left the apartheid behind him and moved to the U.K where Jive records had their head office. He released his self titled first international album and it went gold in the U.K and the U.S. It also garnered multiple Grammy nominations. The album was the beginning of Butler’s long and illustrious career in the music industry.
