Jon Batiste’s entire family is associated with music and he is devoted to the art of making music by blood. Batiste was named one of the 30 most influential people in art in 2012 according to a poll and has a great reputation in the classical music world. Besides working with his band and coming up with solo compositions, Batiste has also collaborated with other musicians. He also holds the responsibility of being the Associate Artistic Director for the National Jazz Museum in Harlem. He released his first album called ‘Times in New Orleans’ at the age of 17 that featured musicians such as Donald Harrison Jr., Christian Scott and Jason Marsalis. Jon Batiste graduated with Trombone Shorty from the New Orleans Centre of Creative Arts (NOCCA) in 2004, after stirring wonder in the music world. His undefeatable talent was appreciated at the NOCCA and he moved on to continue higher musical training at Juilliard School.
Jon Batiste released his second album called ‘Live in New York: At the Rubin Museum of Art’ in 2006. He received the Movado Future Legend Award right after the release. He also made an influential musical presence in Europe as he organized workshops for music as well as ‘music clinics’ in the Netherlands. His great success was his self-produced show at Carnegie Hall as he was lauded for his workshops for underprivileged children who were interested in music. His grand performance was of massive proportions as he was supported by an ensemble of backing vocalists and musicians. He has collaborated with artists such as Cassandra Wilson, Derek Trucks, Prince, Lenny Kravitz, Wynton Marsalis, Roy Hargrove, Aloe Blacc, Jimmy Buffett, Judith Hill, Abbey Lincoln, Mark O' Connor, , Soul Rebels Brass Band, Harry Connick Jr., and Ellis Marsalis.
The key to his successful live performances is that Stay Human has a lot of live energy and they communicate with the audience on a very personal level. Stay Human comprises of Batiste himself on the piano, Phil Kuehm on bass, Joe Saylor on drums, Eddie Barbash on saxophone and Ibanda Ruhumbika on tuba. Batiste supports the notion that live music uplifts humanity. The band believes in unplugged and raw music. They play to stimulate the musical sensibilities of the crowd unlike the ‘plug-in/tune-out’ music. The most interesting aspect of Batiste’s band career is that Stay Human conducts impromptu sessions on the street and at really informal venues. Batiste calls these sessions ‘Love Riots’.
