As a child he sang in Church Choir, community events, school functions, for visitors coming to their home and also for the amateur shows in San Francisco. At 13, he was accepted as a student by Connie Cox, the voice teacher. He studied voice productions, vocal exercises and scales, operating as well as classical skills. He is one of those pop singers who have years of professional training.  Mathis’s first band was with a fellow high school student Merl Saunders. He honored him at his funeral in October, 2007 and acknowledged him for giving him his first ever chance.

Johnny Mathis was first discovered by Helen Nova at a jam session at Black Hawk Club. After hearing his song she decided to manage his career. He debuted with the album, “Johnny Mathis- A new sound in Popular Song”. His second album was sponsored by none other than Columbia Records. Its vice president and producer Mitch Miller helped him define his fascinating crone. In 1956, Johnny Mathis recorded two of his most hit songs “It’s not for me to say” as well as the sensational “Wonderful! Wonderful!”. In 1957, he was asked to sing the latter song in the movie “Lizzie” by MGM. After that he appeared in number of movies and sung in them as well. This early exposure led him to the popular television show “Ed Sullivan Show” in 1957 which further boosted his career. He also started the trend of greatest hits albums in the music industry with his popular album 1958 album titled, “Johnny’s Greatest Hits”. The album spent an unheard of 490 successive weeks (nine and a half years) on the Billboard charts, which earned him place in the Guinness Book of World Records. It was later broken by Pink Floyd in 1980.

Johnny Mathis is a proud recipient of three Grammy Awards. He has also performed two times at the Academy Awards. In 1979, his famous song “The last time I felt like this” from “Same Time, Next Year” was selected for the Oscars. He has limited his singing since the year 2000.  He performs around 50 to 60 times in a year now. He has appeared in several television shows and has made over 100 guest appearances with nearly 33 on “The Tonight Show”. His songs have also appeared in scores of movies. Mathis emerged again in the UK Top Charts in 2007 with the release of his album “The very best of Johnny Mathis” and another time in 2008 with his popular CD “A Night to Remember”. In 2007, Johnny Mathis was instated into the “Hit Parade Hall of Fame”. He also received “Lifetime Achievement Award” by the Academy of Recording Arts and Science” in 2003.
