Hall & Oates
Hall was John’s senior at the university and they were both leading their own separate music groups at the time. John’s band was called the Masters while Oates’ was known as The Temptones.
The first time the two met was in an elevator which the two had taken in order to escape a gunfire opened amid a band competition. They quickly bonded over their mutual interest of music and shortly after, began performing as part of various college bands until they finally formed their own group by the name of Hall & Oates in the year 1970.
The duo’s initial music records namely Whole Oats, War Babies and Abandoned Luncheonette did not get the desired response. However, the song She’s Gone from the album Abandoned Luncheonette became a big hit and reached the number one position on the R&B charts.
Hall & Oates went on to release 21 music records and sold around 80 million album copies around the world. This makes them one of the most successful duos in the history of pop-rock.
Having spent over thirty years in the music industry, John Oates treated the fans to his debut solo album titled Phunk Shui in 2002. This was followed by solo studio efforts including 1000 Miles of Life, Good Road to Follow and Mississippi Mile.
Oates, along with English jazz-pop musician, Jamie Cullum contributed to the song Greatest Mistake, which appeared on the 2004 record While People by Handsome Boy Modeling School.
In March of 2010, at a show playing a medley of Hall & Oates and The Bird and the Bee songs, Oates made a guest appearance and performed alongside the indie rock band (The Bird and the Bee). The same year, he started the 7908: The Aspen Songwriters Festival at Aspen’s the Wheeler Opera House.
Oates’ memoir called the Change of Seasons was co-written by Chris Epting. It was published in April, 2017 and went on to become an Amazon bestseller. It was also highly favorably reviewed by the critics.
John Oates’ solo record Arkansas hit the music stores via Thirty Tiger Records in February of 2018. The collection features songs from genres including jazz, gospel and blues. For this project he teamed up with The Good Road Band featuring a bunch of rising and accomplished stars from the Americana music world. The band has Russ Pahl on pedal steel, Sam Bush on mandolin, Guthrie Trapp on electric guitar, Nathanial Smith on cello and Josh Day on percussion and drums.
Oates feels the record is his best work so far. It is mostly acoustic and shows a great deal of depth and maturity while at the same time his vocals remain youthful and expressive.
