Montgomery came from a musical family; his father a musician taught him to play guitar. He also made his first public appearance when he was only five. He played with his father and mother on his father’s band. This early experience pushed him to become a performing artist. During his adolescence, Montgomery became an active live music performer in small scale venues. At the age of 17, he joined a group and in high school he was a part of the honky tonk country circuit.
He was discovered and scouted from Lexington in 1991 and went directly to Atlantic to sign his first record label deal. Life's a Dance his debut studio effort, came out in 1992 with its title track song rocketing to the top most slots of many charts. Other tracks form the album like "I Love the Way You Love Me" followed up and climbed to number one making the album one of the best country music releases of that time.

Kickin' It Up, John Michael Montgomery’s second album hit stores in 1994. It was a true blockbuster and made Michael a star. The album won multiple platinum certification, topped country/pop charts. The album featured three #1 hits namely, "Be My Baby Tonight", "I Swear", "If You've Got Love" and "Rope the Moon". The artist’s self-titled album came out in 1995; it too topped country charts. This album had a number of hits songs like "Sold", "I Can Love You Like That", "No Man's Land", "Long as I Live" and "Cowboy Lov".

Montgomery was working hard on his next album when he had to take a break from music and get his vocal cords repaired through a surgery. He recovered and brought forth What I Do the Best with a trio of instant hits; "How Was I to Know", "Friends"," I Miss You a Little" were loved by fans all over the country. The success of this album paved way for an awaited A Greatest Hits compilation album that was released in 1997. Next year, Leave a Mark, was released bringing in hit singles like "Hold on to Me" and Cover You in Kisses".

In 1999, John Michael Montgomery showed a shift in his musical inclination. His album Home to You was a contemporary-styled crossover that went really well. The artist entered the new millennium with Brand New Me, made up of up-tempo songs. The album topped charts due to its number one duet "The Little Girl" with Alison Krauss. Krauss’s appearance with John made the album more popular.

Pictures was Montgomery’s next album in line. It was more mature and adult-contemporary inclined and provided a different experience for all fans. The artist’s first holiday album Mr. Snowman was released in 2003 followed by Letters from Home in 2004. Four years later he changed his record label to Stringtown Records and came out with an experimental album Time Flies. Since Time Flies John has not released any albums.

In his music career, John Michael Montgomery released a total of twelve studio albums. Montgomery’s contribution to country music is overwhelming. He has changed the definition of country with the addition of adult contemporary. The artist’s country music profile boasts of 15 number one tracks, record sales of 15 million albums, a large number of awards based on fan votes and three Grammy wins. The artist is also the proud owner of three CMA Awards, an American Music Award and five ACM Awards.
