American Jazz keyboards player and composer John Medeski is recognized for his solo performances as well as with the trio Medeski, Martin & wood. He plays acoustic piano and eclectic array of keyboards including melodic, ARP String Ensemble, clavinet, Hammond B3 organ and Wurlitzer electric piano among others. Born in Kentucky in 1965, Medeski began playing piano while he was still a toddler. He was greatly inspired by Bach, Beethoven and Debussy while growing up. After playing numerous times in family functions and local events, he started his professional career by playing for theatre and dance companies at the age of 13. By the age of 15, he was playing in variety of chambers, weddings and other ensembles as well as directing music for theatre productions and writing musicals.
In 1982, John Medeski was awarded with an NEA award. To study classical music, he moved to Boston where he found Bob Moses and started playing with him. He also played with Jazz Composers Alliance and Ken Schaphorst Big Band and worked with Sam Rivers and Anthony Davis.
In 1990, Medeski came to New York and became active in the downtown jazz scene. He started playing with Billy Martin and Chris Wood in 1991 and their trio Medeski, Martin & Wood garnered enormous popualrity with time, bringing jazz to a rock-oriented audience. The band has toured extensively to both national and international audiences performing funk, jazz and jam music.
Medeski performs in diverse musical styles ranging from groove based funk and jazz to experimental music. In 2006, John Medeski & The Itch performed at All Good Music Festival. Medeski also performed with The Million Dollar Bashers the same year. He was featured on Will Bernard’s album, Blue Plate Special in 2008.
Mostly working as a collaborator, Medeski finally released his debut solo album named A Different Time in April 2013. With his album, he takes his sound to a completely unexpected direction keeping his work fresh and surprising as always. Consisting mostly of his own compositions and improvisations, this album exposes a different side of the prodigal artist and is far more introspective.
A Different Time was recorded at Waterfront Studios and produced by Henry Hirsch. Medeski spent many days recording on Waterfront’s nine-foot Steinway piano. The French piano, a 1924 Gaveau also made a profound impact on the music included in the album.
The title track of the album is improvised by Medeski at the Gaveau. It evokes the night-time ambience occupying listeners’ full attention. The other tracks present intensely focused experience with Medeski’s deep personal sound. I’m Falling in Love Again and His Eye Is On the Sparrow offers a spiritual journey through the Gaveau. The inspirational and heartbreakingly gorgeous song Luz Marina depicts the emotions of an adopted child and the wistful Otis closes this fascinating album.
A Different Time takes you to a whole new magical and wonderful world. With his new album gaining popularity gradually, Medeski is touring all around the nation to inspire audiences. Buy John Medeski tickets and get lost in the meditative and contemplative music of this keyboard master.
