This year’s John McLaughlin tour is a commemoration of many things. For one, it is his and the 4th Dimension band’s farewell tour after twenty five years of performing together. Hence, there is a bittersweet aspect to it which fans of the act can feel kicking in already. Then, the tour is accompanied by the Mahavishnu Orchestra of Music, a new collaborative effort to pay tribute to the original Mahavishnu Orchestra. Thirdly, McLaughlin is joined by Jimmy Herring on stage as fellow headliner. Herring is a household name in America and considered a creative frontrunner of American rock-jam band movements.
When combined, the tour is dubbed The Meeting of the Spirits, which is a good synthesis of this event. Musically, it is expected to be the coming together of a band’s journey; of two different cultures; and of three contrasting genres of music on one stage. This tour is scheduled to hit various cities and venues across America this fall. John Mclaughlin tickets may be on sale for a concert near you.
Having built an exemplary career over the past five decades, John McLaughlin has created a personal vision that allows his music to transcend material boundaries. This has allowed him to be one of the most iconic composers, guitarists and bandleaders. This is the guitarist’s first extensive U.S tour in seven years and also the first time he is exploring the plethora of work the Mahavishnu Orchestra have done.
McLaughlin has said on more than one occasion that this may well be his last American performance. As a result, he expects his friends and collaborators to join him on the road this time ‘round. This is a bittersweet prospect for his fans, because while it may be the last they see of the guitarist on stage, it also means a possibility of exclusive appearances of many other reputable artists and musicians. Miles Davis and Tony Williams are just some of the name-drops McLaughlin has collaborated with over the years. With albums such as “In a Silent Way” and “Bitches Brew” to their credits, McLaughlin’s pairing with them has resulted in a number of hits that may feature in his performances.
Spiritualism and John McLaughlin
“You get on stage and you get amazing inspiration. You don't know where it comes from. And that's all, really, that we live for when we go to the stage — to have that thing happen. Because that's the only moment we have, really. The rest doesn't exist."—John McLaughlin
The singer-songwriter has found spiritualistic inspiration from within and around him. Playing with Miles Davis, for example, has helped McLaughlin in understanding the nuances within music. His grueling musical sessions kept McLaughlin on his toes and on guard. Furthermore, John Coltrane’s music had a profound effect on him as well, particularly the album A Love Supreme because it introduced the idea of spirituality in Jazz for him, something his career has embodied over the years.
A Love Supreme has influenced McLaughlin’s latest effort with the 4th Dimension as well; the new single “To the One”. It involuntarily became homage to Coltrane before the band even realized it. The organic nature of the music is evident in the tracks on this album, resonating of the early 1960’s. As McLaughlin puts it; “I don't want to be Coltrane. I'm happy to be who I am. The music just basically comes out the way it is."
The Meeting of the Spirits’ concerts are divided into three separate sets. Two of these are individual sets by McLaughlin and Herring, respectively. The third set is a combination of the two, with backing from the Mahavishnu Orchestra. The night, then, becomes a celebration of spirituality and jazz; of philosophy and the best of music. It is an equally enriching night for music lovers as well as those who have never been introduced to spirituality before. Join these artists and acts as they perform multiple venues across the US. John Mclaughlin tickets for these shows are available now.
