John Lithgow: A Theater Superstar
John Lithgow got into acting after a performance at Harvard of Gilbert and Sullivan’s version of, “Utopia, Limited.” He then enrolled himself at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and shortly after graduation, Lithgow became the Director of the Arts and Literature at the Pacifica radio station, WBAI. It was in the early ‘70s that he decided to pursue acting and was offered a role in David Storey’s hit play, ‘The Changing Room.’ His work in that play impressed everyone and he won a Tony and a Drama Desk Award in ‘Best Feature Actor in a Play’ and ‘Outstanding Performance’ respectively.
John Lithgow appeared in three more plays, ‘My Fat Friend,’ ‘Hamlet’ and ‘Trelawny of the ‘Wells’’ before he got the chance to work with Meryl Streep in a play written by Arthur Miller titled, ‘A Memory of Two Mondays.’ After that, he went on to star in multiple plays from the mid ‘1970s to 1990 including, ‘M. Butterfly’ and ‘Beyond Therapy’ out of which the former earned him a Tony Award nomination for, ‘Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play.’ Lithgow continued to wow the world with his acting skills by starring in many popular plays and was eventually inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 2005.

‘Dealing: Or the Berkeley-to-Boston Forty-Brick Lost-Bag Blues’ is the name of John Lithgow’s debut film which was released in 1972. The flick bombed at the box office but that didn’t stop Lithgow from pursuing his dreams of becoming a successful actor. In 1976, he was casted as Robert Lasalle in the film, ‘Obsession’ which highlighted his amazing acting skills and brought his way mainstream exposure. In 1983 and 1984, John Lithgow played Roberta Muldoon and Sam Burns in films, ‘The World According to Garp’ and ‘Terms of Endearment’ respectively. Both movies received a lot of critical acclaim and earned him an Academy Award nomination in the category of, ‘Best Supporting Actor.’
John Lithgow then appeared in several popular films from 1985 to 2000 including, ‘Silent Fall’ and ‘A Civil Action,’ ‘L.A. Story,’ ‘Distant Thunder’ and ‘Memphis Belle’ to name a few. In 2017, he starred in three movies, ‘Beatriz at Dinner,’ ‘Daddy’s Home 2’ and ‘Pitch Perfect 3.’ The former featured, Salma Hayek as Beatriz, Chloë Sevigny as Shannon and Connie Britton as Kathy. The movie received two Independent Spirit Award nominations.
