Joe Lovano is of Sicilian-American descent. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1952. From a very young age he was into jazz music thanks to his father Big T Lovano. Joe’s initial jazz music influences were acclaimed artists like Sonny Stitt, john Coltrane and Dizzy Gillespie. He regularly practiced jazz music with a number of instruments apart from saxophone such as drums, flute and clarinet. After completing his high school, Joe went for further studies to the world renowned Berklee College of Music. Here he has the chance of learning music under able jazz teachers like Gary Burton and Herb Pomeroy.
Joe mainly focused on the post bop genre. While studying in Berklee he performed as an apprentice with bands like Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra and Woody Herman’s Thundering Herd. Joe later moved to New York and continued performing with Mel Lewis for quite some time. During the early 80’s Lovano joined the quartet of jazz guitarist John Scofield. This was a beginning of a great music relationship as Scofield and Lovano went on to collaborate on a number of different projects. He also produced and composed an album with Scofield titled Oh!. From early 90’s Lovano has been playing a custom made signature Borgani Saxophone that has gold keys and pearl silver body.
Lovano has worked on albums of other notable artists such as bop guitar player John Abercrombie’s open Land, bassist Charlie Haden’s The Montreal Tapes: Liberation Music Orchestra, jazz pianist Steve Kuhn’s Mostly Coltrane. Lovano has composed and produced a number of albums with acclaimed jazz drummer Paul Motian namely The Story of Maryam, One time Out, Motian in Tokyo, At The Village Vanguard, Sound of Love and I Have the Room Above Her. Some fine solo studio albums by Lovano are Tri Fascination: Edition One, Tenor Legacy, Tones Shapes and Colors, Flights of Fantasy: Trio Fascination Edition Two, Quartets: Live at the Village Vanguard, Streams of Expression and Universal Language.
Joe has worked with artists like Bill Stewart, Eddie Henderson, Dave Holland, Lewis Nash, Michael Brecker and Hank Jones.
