Jodeci is a band that has redefined the traditional R&B genre by blending it with other music styles. The band had been on a hiatus for sometime but their reunion in 2014 came as a delight to their loyal fans. They will be holding a live concert in Oakland very soon. If you want to be a part of it, make sure you have your Jodeci tickets booked in advance.
How They Met
Jodeci is a band that comprises two sets of brothers. All of them belonged to deeply religious families. They grew up attending church choirs and singing gospel music. The brothers had heard each other’s songs on radio but had never actually met until their teens when they were introduced through their girlfriends. Soon they became friends and decided to form an R&B group.
The band members of Jodeci include JoJo, DeVante Swing, Mr. Dalvin and K.Ci. The interesting thing about the band name Jodeci is that it’s actually a combination of the names of its members.
Stars in the Making
In 1989 after the formation of Jodeci, the musicians recorded a demo tape and went to the New York City to try their luck. They managed to get an appointment with Uptown Records but did not get a contract. The group caught the attention of rapper Heavy D who requested the Uptown founder to audition the group.
Their live performance was a revelation and the label decided to polish their talent further before launching them. This is when they made appearances on albums by various music artists. Among these are Jeff Redd’s Quiet Storm and Father MC’s ‘Treat ‘Em Like They Want to Be Treated.’ DeVante also contributed by helping to write and produce songs on Christopher William’s Changes and Mary J.Blige’s What’s the 411?
When Jodeci finally made their debut with the album ‘Forever My Lady’ in 1991, they not only surprised the audience and critics but also became an inspiration for upcoming bands of the time.
‘Forever My Lady’ revived a genre that was fast losing its appeal and popularity. This was done by adding a touch of hip hop to R&B. The songs on the album range from passionate love songs to upbeat numbers. Some parts of the lyrics in the songs are sung while some parts are rapped. Among the popular numbers in the collection are Come and Talk To Me, I’m Still Waiting, Gotta Love, Stay and of course the title track.
The album met an overwhelming response, debuting at the top spot on the Top R&B Albums chart. It also hit high on the Billboard 200 and went on to receive platinum certification from the RIAA.
‘Diary of a Mad Band’
In the year 1993, Jodeci surprised their fans again with their second music album ‘Diary of a Mad Band.’ Once again the number one spot on the R&B Albums chart was occupied by the band for two weeks. The album produced classics such as What About Us, Feenin’ and the number one R&B hit Cry For You. Released via Uptown Records, the album featured appearances by Timbaland and Missy Elliot and Sistas on tracks In the Meantime and Won’t Waste You respectively. The record went on to be certified double platinum.
Hiatus and Reunion
Following the release of the song ‘Get on Up’ in 1996, Jodeci decided to go on a hiatus. The fans missed watching their live performances and when they decided to make a comeback the music industry and their fans happily welcomed them. In November of 2014, the band members performed a medley of their songs at the Soul Train Awards. That performance also included a glimpse of their new single ‘Nobody Wins.’ This was the first new song by Jodeci since ‘Get on Up’ in 1996 and their first performance in the US since 2006.
‘The Past, The Present, The Future’
The Past, The Present, The Future is Jodeci’s first music album in twenty years. Their last record ‘The Show, the After Party, the Hotel’ came out back in 1995. The album has generally received favorable reviews from the critics. The record reached the second spot on the R&B Albums chart and 23rd on the Billboard 200.
The live performances of Jodeci are a treat to watch. Now that they are coming to Oakland to entertain you with their hits at the Paramount Theatre, make sure you don’t miss their show by booking your Jodeci tickets.
