Born in 1971 in Tacoma, Washington, Jo Koy graduated from high school and then moved to Los Angeles with his family. He then went on to study at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, but later dropped out of university so as to perform standup comedy. He is well known for his performances on the E! show Chelsea Lately, and is a Filipino American well known for his unique style of comedy as part of the new generation of standup comedians.
 
Jo Koy first began doing standup comedy in Las Vegas at a well known comedy club in 1994. After a brief stint here, he was then hired to perform at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in its show, Catch a Rising Star, as a regular performer. He also hosted his own performances in venues such as the Huntridge Theater, and even went so far as to sell his own tickets door to door after booking his venue. His first appearance on TV was on the show, BET’s Comic View, through a talent coordinator who saw Jo Koy perform in Las Vegas and was impressed by his talent. Jo Koy appeared in two seasons of the show Comic View as well as on the show Showtime at the Apollo.
 
Jo Koy, his stage name, is Filipino for ‘joker’ and a nickname his family gave him at a young age due to his comic behavior at a young age. He therefore decided to use this nickname in his comic performances and it has since then stuck to him and is the name through which numerous people recognize this fabulous standup comedian, star of a number of TV shows, who is definitely worthy of Jo Koy tickets. His first performance began at a Las Vegas coffee house and it was his unlimited energy on the stage, his catchy and insight filled jokes and his humor inspired by his family that resulted in Jo Koy becoming a sensation, and one of the ten comics to watch, according to the Daily Variety.
 
According to Jo Koy, it was his mother who constantly supported him and encouraged him to pursue his talent in comedy and his knack as an actor. It was his mother who supported him and encouraged him to perform at school talent shows and perform in front of family members, relatives and friends. It was this constant encouragement and support that led Jo Koy to start performing at a local coffee house then move to Los Angeles and finally get a performance in 2005 in The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. In fact, he was one of the very few performers at this show who received a ‘standing ovation’.
 
In 2006, Jo Koy performed with Carlos Mencia in his Punisher Tour followed by an appearance in a number of popular and famous shows such as Jimmy Kimmel Live, BET’s Comic View, Last Call with Carson Daly and Jamie Foxx Presents: Laffapalooza. He has also performed in various VH1 I Love the 70s, 80s and 90s show episodes. He is regularly featured at Improv, is part of college circuit tours and has performed in clubs outside the US as well. Currently residing in Los Angeles, he never forgets to entertain his fans and is again touring with his distinctive brand of humor.
