After decades’ worth of a career, the guitarist is showing no signs slowing down. He is all set to embark on the next chapter of his storied career on a debut tour with his new band, The Invisible Whip. Collaborating on a number of concerts with John McLaughlin, Herring is also touring solo. Catch him on one of these events by purchasing some Jimmy Herring tickets now.

Herring Live: An exclusive experience

During the late 90’s and early 2000’s, Herring played with a number of bands such as the Grateful Dead, The Other Ones, Phil Lesh, Jazz is Dead and Frogwings. However, he was not in the creative space of just playing with one band, and it slowly became clear that Herring is a solo artist first and then a collaborator. In this year’s shows, for example, he is debuting the Invisible Whip, his latest band. Alongside this, he is also sharing the stage with other musical acts such as the Mahavishnu Orchestra and John McLaughlin, amongst others.

These apparently hotchpotch collaborations actually add to Herring’s unpredictability; they keep his shows fresh and energetic. At fifty five years of age, and after more than forty years of playing the guitar, the musician possesses the uncanny ability to revitalize each of his performances so that they appear completely new.  These shows, his shows, are not a repetition or covers of the work he has done before. No, while these concerts may echo of Herring’s plethora of work, they are by no mean restricted to it, and every performance adds a flavor of exclusivity to the set as well.

Upping His Game

Herring’s second solo release proved to be one of his best collaborations. “Subject to Change Without Notice” (2012) was a record on which the musician surrounded himself with close friends who happened to be impeccable musicians as well. Produced by longtime collaborator John Keane (REM, Widespread Panic, Indigo Girls), the album featured a new pairing up with guitarist John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra as well.

This project resulted in a musical relationship which is blossoming to this day, with McLaughlin regularly featuring in ARU reunion performances. Fast forward a few years and we have Herring and McLaughlin on an extensive cross-country Meeting of the Spirits Tour. Perhaps the most breathtaking aspect of the two artists’ collaboration is that an audience does not find the lack of vocals monotonous. The music speaks for itself, and fairly effectively too.

These joint shows are divided into three separate sets; one for each artists, dedicated to their solo performances and a third with the two together. Backed by the Invisible Whip and Mahavishnu Orchestra, these shows are enriching nights for music, with cultural and musical diversity which is resonating with audiences. Jimmy Herring tickets for these performances and other events featuring the veteran guitarist are now available. Buy yours and attend a magical evening full of culture and music.

Jimmy Herring

Hailing from North Carolina, Herring has been playing the guitar for about forty years. His technique is inspired by and contributes to intricate harmonic and rhythmic melodies belonging to country, rock and jazz traditions. He is one of the best custodians of improvised music and is known for leading live performances on a completely different tangent impromptu. During the past five years, the musical giant has shared the stage with hi musical heroes, contemporaries and up-and-comers. Herring is responsible for the creation and creative direction of many influential pop/rock bands which is why he is considered many musicians’ musician.

Revered by multi-genre music communities, the first time Herring honed a guitar was at Berklee College of Music and, simultaneously, the Guitar Institute of Technology. From there, he recruited members into what was to be his seminal band, Col. Bruce Hampton and The Aquarium Rescue Unit (ARU). These members included Oteil Burbridge, Matt Mundy and the late Bruce Hampton. ARU toured the United States repeatedly during the late 80’s and 90’s mesmerizing audiences and fellow musicians alike. The group’ most impressive characteristic was the unpredictability in their performances, brought about by improvisation during their sets. This gradually became Herring’s signature style and one that he still experiments with.
