Born on the 1st of April, 1948, Jimmy Cliff is not only a very talented musician but also a brilliant actor. He is the only living holder of the biggest honor which can be given to an artist by the government of Jamaica, the Order of Merit. He is famous for songs such as Rivers to Cross, You Can Get It Really Want, Sitting in Limbo, The Harder They Come, Wonderful World and Beautiful People. His music revolves around the genres of reggae and ska. Apart from being a singer, he plays several instruments such as keyboards, conga drums, piano and guitar. In the year 2010, he became an inductee of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
When Jimmy Cliff was only fourteen years old, he released an album named Hurricane Hattie. This went on to become a massive hit. From then on, there was no looking back for this young musician. Some of his early hit songs include Pride and Passion, Miss Jamaica, Dearest Beverley, and Kings of King. Shortly afterwards, he got a recording contract with Island Records. He released his first international album in the 1960s under the title of Hard Road to Travel. It went on to become a big hit all over the world. One of the most popular songs from the record is Waterfall.
Shortly afterwards, Cliff released singles Vietnam and Wonderful World, Beautiful People. Both of them were released in the 70s and became extremely famous all over the world. Vietnam was called "the best protest song" by Bob Dylan. Cliff took a shot at his acting career in the year 1972, appearing in a movie called The Harder They Come by Ivanhoe Martin. Its director was Perry Henzell. It went on to become a raging success and its soundtrack sold countless copies around the world.
Jimmy Cliff then went on to release a number of albums, all of which became considerably successful. He then went on a hiatus and traveled to Africa. Consequently, he became a convert to Islam and changed his name to El Hadj Naim Bachir. However, he went back to producing music and went on extensive tours. He released an album in the year 1985 called Cliff Hanger. It became a phenomenal success and gained him a Grammy Award for the ‘Best Reggae Album.’ The following year, he featured on Dirty Work, which was an album by The Rolling Stones. A few years later, his track Shelter of Your Love was included in a famous movie named Cocktail. In the year 1955, Jimmy Cliff sang a song for the hit Disney animation movie, The Lion King. The song was titled Hakuna Matata. It became a huge hit all over the world.
His album, Fantastic Plastic People was released in the year 2002. It was a collaboration album with Sting, Annie Lennox and Joe Strummer. He also gave a performance at the Commonwealth Games the same year. The following year, one of his songs was featured in the movie, Something’s Gotta Give.
