The Hustle that Defines Jessie Reyez’s Career
Where there’s will there’s a way. And Toronto born Jessie Reyez turned around her fortunes by moving to Fort Lauderdale after high school. She worked as a bartender in the city and in-between serving her clients, would pen songs on scrap receipts and even bribed the DJs with free drinks if they play her songs.
After being accepted in a youth program in Toronto called the Remix Project, she moved back to the city and worked hard to write new songs. Daniel Daley of the R&B duo DVSN took her under his wing and helped nurture her songwriting talent.
In 2017, Reyez released her debut EP “Kiddo” and it featured the poignant track “Figures”. A song about an ex and finally realizing that he won’t change, Reyez packs a lot of emotion into the number. Vocal about her experiences in the music industry and the things she had to endure, the “Gatekeeper” singer revealed the inspiration behind the hit track. She finally exposed music producer Noel “Detail” Fisher for sexually prepositioning her earlier in her career, after two other singers came forward with their sexual assault claims against him.
Talking about her songwriting process, Reyez admits that everything she writes is legit and about the things happening in her life. According to her, working in studio is like making a copy of that moment and she believes more in rawness than a polished version. “Sola” is another popular track by her that talks about living up to the expectations of an ex’s mother.
The Bonds that Tie
Coming from a tight-knit family, Jessie Reyez cites her parents as her biggest strength. At the 2018 Juno Awards she brought them along on stage with her while accepting her “Breakthrough Artist” award. They also join the “Cotton Candy” singer on her tours.
Speaking of tours, the phenomenal musician has mapped out her North American “Being Human On Tour”. The 29-date trek will keep the star on the road all through October and November, and the soaring sales of Jessie Reyez tickets suggest she’ll be entertaining a house full wherever she goes.
The tour is in support of her second EP “Being Human In Public” that features a collection of seven songs. An eclectic mix of US based hip-hop/soul vibes, salsa cadences and R&B, the album is courageous, catchy and poignant. A strong advocate of women empowerment, her song “Body Count” is chocked-full of attitude as she asserts her independence and not needing to rely on a man. Boasting of one of the most distinctive singing voices, Reyez shines on the track “Apple Juice”. An eclectic number, it enhances her fusion of R&B influences and pop melodies.
The songs “Imported” and “F*** Being Friends” highlight her position as an alpha female who wants to break free from the societal imposed gender derived roles. Jessie is neither afraid nor apologetic about her lyrics as she rides on sheer toughness and independence.
The EP is scheduled for fall release and in its anticipation the fans are rushing to secure their concert tickets. Her global devotees are fixated by her soulful singing and intense, unflinching personality. She’s an absolute joy to watch live as she takes on her the crowd with full confidence but also gets overwhelmed when the enthusiastic, appreciative singalong fans sometimes proves too much for her.
Claiming to be hungry for a lot more, Jessie Reyez will surely reach newer heights with an astounding legacy.
