The Two-Year Break
The “Bang Bang” singer was at the top of her career in 2015. She was a judge on a famous reality television show, had two number one singles, had broken through the U.S market as well as become one of the best R&B singers in the UK. However, Jessie J had a poor constitution ever since she was young and she became ill after this success. She has not been vocal about it even after her comeback but the pop star has suffered from and cured a physical ailment during her hiatus and also grieved the deaths of her grandparents. She said in an interview, “I was diagnosed with some health issues that I’m not ready to talk about that I had to really face as a woman. I also lost my grandparents and didn’t have time to grieve. The hardest part about being an artist is that you have to open your wounds to heal other people and you don’t often get the time to heal your own. I needed to be with my real feelings.”
Therefore, the break became necessary for her to look within herself. She found the capacity to deal with grief and became more honest with her music. Her previous hits have been penned by someone else; however, in R.O.S.E Jessie J. plays chief songstress and a great one at that. Billboard magazine got insight into two unreleased tracks from the album, one of which is titled “Queen”. They are described as an anthemic celebration of femininity. So, while the break meant less of Jessie J., it has resulted in a kickass new album.
About Jessie J
Born Jessica Cornish in London, Jessie J. overcame childhood heart problems after which her show biz career began at age eleven in the theater. With the completion of college, J. was signed with a British indie label Gut Records which went bankrupt shortly after.
Having suffered and recovered from a heart stroke at age 18, she gained a publishing contract with Sony records and wrote hit songs for Chris Brown, Miley Cyrus and Dutch X Factor’s 2009 winner, Lisa Lois. In fact, the song she wrote for Miley Cyrus was a number two hit in the U.S, titled “Party in the USA”. The song is still a pop culture favorite and has featured in many television shows and movies (such as the Hollywood blockbuster “Pitch Perfect”). After gaining buzz online, she was signed onto Universal Records and began working with hit-makers such as B.o.B and Dr. Luke.
In 2010, her first single “Do it Like a Dude” was released. The song was penned by Rihanna and it put Jessie J. on the map as a credible hip-hop artist. The singer made it big in America through this song and was later a part of the celebrity ensemble “Bang Bang” single. Her singles such as “Wild” and “It’s my party” have aided towards leaving her mark on the international stage. Even after taking all this time off, her work has kept her relevant. Now ready to release R.O.S.E, J. has penned tracks based on the downtime she has spent in her break. They are songs of acceptance, self-awareness and taking pride in oneself.
“Think About That”
Released in September 2017, “Think About that” is a single which features DJ Camper as well. The song was the result of J. and Camper pushing one another to pen down a song while hanging out together. This song is important to J. because it was the first time in a long time that she had written a song by herself and for herself. She felt she had “lost her flair” but this song changed things.
While the album is being highly anticipated and its singles are gaining rave reviews, Jessie J. has embarked on a solo tour, her first in two years. Jessie J tickets for various venues across the US are selling fast. Needless to say, Jessie J. is back, and she does not seem to be going anywhere for a while.
