Rivera spent early years of his education in Levittown, which is near the town of Toa Baja. Jerry belonged to a family of musicians He is the son of the guitarist Edwin Rivera and singer Dominga. His sister Saned is a singer and his brothers Jose and Ito are trained instrumental musicians. Jerry was greatly inspired by the musicians in his family especially his parents. When Jerry was little, he used to accompany his parents to their performances on stage. In 1986, this thirteen year old went along with his father to a performance at the hotel San Juan in Isla Verde. Famous Puerto Rican salsa singer Frankie Ruiz made a guest appearance at the show. They sang a few songs and took a picture with him. After the death of Frankie, Rivera released a tribute album in 2003 titled Canto a mi Idolo... Frankie Ruiz meaning 'I sing to my Idol... Frankie Ruiz'. The picture Rivera took alongside Frankie made the cover photo of this album, signifying the level of respect and honor he has for the artist.
Tommy Olivencia witnessed this child prodigy perform with his father in 1988 and suggested that he should sing solo. Fourteen year old Rivera was signed by CBS music department after they received a demo of his singing talents, compiled by his father.
Given the meteoric success after recording of his first album titled Empezando A Vivir, Rivera gained popularity as "El Bebé de la Salsa" - the baby of salsa. The album spawned the hit song “De La Cabeza A Los Pies” –‘Head Over Heels’. The second album titled Abriendo Puertas ('Opening Doors') spawned singles that initially topped in Puerto Rico and then became popular in Latin America. The songs included Nada Sin Ti ('Nothing Without You'), Como un Milagro ('Like a Miracle'), Esa Niña ('That Girl') and Dime ('Tell Me').
Cuenta Conmigo ('Count on Me') his third album won numerous Platinum Record awards. The album made history by becoming the ‘most sold salsa album’. It also maintained the top position for three months back to back on the Latin American Billboards. The hit singles from the album included “Casi Un Hechizo” (Neary A Charm) and “Cuenta Conmigo”. Chart topping single “Amores Como El Nuestro” (Love like ours) belongs to the same album as well and is considered as ‘the best song’ by Rivera.
For his remarkable contributions to the music industry, Rivera was presented with three Crystal Awards by ‘Sony Records’. He also got the Premio Lo Nuestro Awards twice. Besides being a tremendous singer Rivera also appeared in the movie “I Like It Like That”. He also did a Latin American soap opera by the name “Mi destino eres tu” ('You are my destiny'). The soap opera was aired in 2005 on Univision featuring Jerry Rivera as himself. Jerry also appeared in financial services conglomerate productions under the name Banco Popular de Puerto Rico. The productions included Con la musica por Dentro and Al Compas de un Sentimiento. Jerry Rivera was also one of the four judges in Idol Puerto Rico 2011, which is Puerto Rican version of the American Idol.
