Jennifer Hudson’s story is one littered with the instinct for survival; where the artist has battled back into contention from crushing adversity. Hudson’s short career has seen lows but her resolve has made her bounce back not only into relevance, but for moments capture the nation’s imagination with her sensational voice.

Jennifer Hudson hit the airwaves during a dispiriting exit in American Idol Season 3, where she finished seventh. Her rise came through the unprecedented medium of Hollywood, when she starred in the film adaptation of Dreamgirls, Broadway’s super-hit musical. After winning worldwide acclaim, she was hit by a personal setback while promoting her debut album when three of her closest relatives were brutally murdered. With determination Hudson has clawed her way back into becoming a leading R&B and soul singer over the last couple of years. Her recently released sophomore album I Remember Me is riding the wave of success and Hudson has lined up shows for her countless fans who are milling for their Jennifer Hudson tickets.

Jennifer Hudson’s well-trained, big booming voice is ideally suited to the rousing soul and blues ballads and reflects her background as a church choir singer. She was born as Jennifer Kate Hudson in Chicago, Illinois in 1981 and grew to graduate from Dunbar Vocational High School. Inspired by Africa-American stalwarts Aretha Franklin and Whitney Houston, Hudson trained with the church choir. She began participating in talent shows at a young age, with school musicals also employing her powerful singing. The Chicago production of the musical Big River employed her vocals and she signed to Righteous Records in 2002. She continued work as a singer on board the Disney Wonder cruise ship. Her coach David Johnson worked incessantly with her, 5 days a week, on performance mainstays like stage presence, interviewing, songwriting and physical fitness.

Jennifer Hudson auditioned for American Idol Season 3 in 2004 and proceeded to build up a head of steam after a slow start, becoming one of the leading performers of the top 12. However, she was voted off in seventh place. Hudson’s resurgence after this was nothing short of spectacular. She auditioned for the role of ‘Effie White’ in the film adaptation of the Broadway musical Dreamgirls and managed to outshine her more illustrious co-stars in the film. It landed her a plethora of prestigious awards, including an Oscar. After further Hollywood success with The Secret Life of Bees, she turned her attentions to her long-planned debut album which had the assistance of Ne-Yo as writer and co-producer. Jennifer Hudson came out in September 2008, but her promotion campaign was hit by tragedy. Hudson’s mother, brother and nephew were shot dead by her estranged brother-in-law and she took a hiatus. She returned to sing The Star-Spangled Banner at Super Bowl XLIII, backing it up with other performances on Idol and Oprah. I Remember Me, her second offering, came out in March 2011.

American Idol was Hudson’s first major stepping stone, with her Top 9 performance of “Circle of Life” denting the early-show criticism so much so that her eventual vote-off was a shock. Last year she was declared as the third most successful Idol alumnus ever. In 2006, she beat off the likes of Raven-Symone and Fantasia Barrino while auditioning for the role of Effie White in Dreamgirls. Outperforming a powerhouse cast of Beyonce, Jamie Foxx and Eddie Murphy, Hudson stole the show in the character-defining scene where Effie sings “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going”. She won countless awards, including BET, BAFTA, Screen Actors Guild, Golden Globe and an Oscar for the Best Supporting Actress. Jennifer Hudson was a runaway success (reaching #2), hitting Gold certification with over 1 million worldwide sales. It received a Best R&B Album Grammy on the weight of Grammy-nominated songs “I’m His Only Woman” & “Spotlight” (#24). Her more introspective and deep follow-up, I Remember Me, debuted at #2.

Jennifer Hudson’s powerful voice, encapsulated by her Dreamgirls moment of glory, has been recreated in her live performances. Her flexibility ensures pop and soul enthusiasts all find space in her concerts and upcoming dates see her at Austin, Toronto and Ottawa.
