Rocking since day one
Jeff Lynne was born in Birmingham where he got his education from, Alderlea Boys’ Secondary School. He was always interested in music and received his first guitar from his father. He later formed a band with his friends David Walsh and Robert Reader in 1963. They were collectively known as the ‘The Rockin’ Hellcats’ but changed the title to ‘The Handicaps’ before settling on ‘The Andicaps.’ The band jammed at the Shard End Community Center and performed weekly. Lynne then went on to join the local band, ‘The Chads’ to replace Mick Adkins in 1964.
A year later, he got his hands on his first studio recording equipment, ‘Beocord 2000 De Luxe,’ a stereo reel-to-reel tape recorder which taught him how to be a producer. He soon joined Nightriders, who later changed their name to the Idle Race, as the guitarist in 1966 before accepting an offer from his friend, Roy Wood to become a member of the Move in 1970.
The inception of Electric Light Orchestra
Jeff Lynne contributed to the group’s last two albums, ‘Looking On’ and ‘Message from the Country.’ Both records received favorable reviews from the critics. Then in 1970 Bev Bevan, Roy Wood and Jeff Lynne rode the band’s transition into the Electric Light Orchestra. Their music was described as a fusion of Beatlesque pop, futuristic iconography and classical arrangements.
The Electric Light Orchestra made their debut by releasing their first self-titled album in 1971 which received mild success on the charts. After the release of the record, Roy Wood left the group which allowed Lynne to become the group’s leader. He began to arrange and produce every record. The group returned with their second and third album, ‘ELO 2’ and ‘On the Third Day’ in 1973. Since then they have gone on to put out eleven studio albums more out of which, ‘Time’ and ‘Discovery’ reached the first spot on the UK Albums chart.
