Born in 1948, Jean Michel is the son of the famous movie composer Maurice Jarre. He began learning piano when he was only five years of age. He left classical music and was drawn to jazz before he formed a rock band by the name of Mystere IV. He then joined Groupe de Recherches Musicales and became Pierre Schaeffer’s pupil. He experiments with electro-acoustic music produced the single ‘La Cage.’ Although it was made in 1969 but due to its experimental sound, Jarre was unable to find a label that would release the song. It eventually saw release in 1971.
Most of Jarre’s early works went unnoticed. While struggling to find his own voice, the music artist wrote for a number of singers and also composed music for movies. ‘Oxygene’ was his breakthrough effort. The studio album comprised six tracks. It first released in France in 1976 and saw international release the following year. The record topped the French music charts and reached number two and number 78 on UK and US charts respectively.
The electronic music and composer Jean Micel Jarre’s fourth music album titled ‘Équinoxe’ came out in the year 1978. In this record Jarre had further developed his sound by employing more rhythmic elements that included increased use of sequencing on bass lines. Most of this was achieved with the use of custom equipment made by his collaborator, Michel Geiss. ‘Équinoxe’ scored its way to the eleventh spot on the UK Album Chart and 126th on the Billboard 200.
‘Équinoxe’ fared well commercially but the response was not as tremendous as that for ‘Oxygene.’ In 1979, Jarre performed an open-air concert at the Place de la Concorde on Bastille Day. The show set a record for the largest number of attendees at an open-air concert. The hit event introduced Jarre to Francis Rimbert and the two went on to develop a productive work relationship. Besides, the show also boosted the sales of ‘Équinoxe.’ About 800,000 album copies were sold between 14th July and 31st August, 1979.
In the year 1985, Jarre received an invite by Houston Grand Opera’s music director to perform at the 15th anniversary of Texas. Initially Jarre did not take the invitation very seriously as he was occupied with other projects. But upon his visit to the city, he was so amazed by its visual grandeur that he agreed to perform there.
The year 1985 also marked the 25th anniversary of the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center foundation for which Jarre was asked to perform by NASA.
The thirteenth music record by the French musician was released via Sony Music in January, 2000. In the US the album was released on Disques Dreyfus in 2004. The album came as a pleasant surprise for the fans of Jarre. It was a shift from the kind of music he had made previously. It is the French composer’s first album to have actual songs with lyrics. ‘Métamorphoses’ also features appearances by other singers, most of them females. ‘Bells’ and ‘Rendez-vous à Paris’ are the only tracks on the record that are mostly instrumental.
Jean Michel Jarre released his eighteenth album Electronica 2: The Heart of Noise in May of 2016 whereas his nineteenth album ‘Oxygene 3’ saw release on December 2nd, 2016. It marked the 40th anniversary of the original ‘Oxygene’ album. The musician has used the same minimalist approach in this album as he did for the first two Oxygen albums.
