Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra is based in the heart of New York in Manhattan at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. This center is the hub of various activities related to arts and culture. Lincoln Center is also the home of Metropolitan Opera, New York City Ballet, Julliard School, The Chamber Society Music Society of Lincoln Center and Film Society of Lincoln Center. Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra is also known as JLCO. This is a non-profit organization that was founded in the year 1988. In 1991 it became the official jazz touring band for the center. This orchestra is famous for commission works of different composers such as Benny Golson, Geri Allen, Melba Liston and Marcus Roberts. Since debut the orchestra has toured a number of cities across the US and has gone abroad to give performances in countries of Europe as well as Australia, Japan, Taiwan and China.
Till date the orchestra has composed and produced fine albums like Jump Start and Jazz, The Rhythm Road, All Rise, Conga Square, Sweet Release and Ghost Story Ted Nash Portrait in Seven Shades and Vitoria Suite. The current art director of JLCO is Wynton Marsalis who heads almost all the liver performances by the orchestra. Marsalis has won accolades from both critics as well as fans, he has won nine Grammy Awards including Best Jazz Instrumental Solo, Best Jazz Album, Best Spoken Word Album and Best Instrumental Performance. He is also the winner of a Pulitzer Prize for his music album Blood on the Fields. This master trumpeter has released albums like Live at Blues Alley, The Majesty of the Blues, Baroque Music for Trumpets, Crescent City Christmas Card, Thick in the South: Soul Gestures in Southern Blue, Uptown Ruler: Soul Gestures in Southern Blue, Concert for Planet Earth, Tackling the Monster: Marsalis on Practice, Half Past Autumn Suite and Unforgiveable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson.
Some other members of the JLCO are trumpeter Ryan Kisor, trombone players Vincent Gardener and Elliot Mason, saxophone players Ted Nash and Sherman Irby, Ali Jackson on drum, pianist Dan Nimmer and Carlos Henriquez on bass.
