Jason Bonham was obsessive about playing drums from an early age. He made an appearance with his father in the movie “The Song Remains The Same,” in which he was shown drumming on his own kit. He began his career at the age of seventeen when he joined the band Airrace. He soon joined another band named Virginia Wolf qith whom he went on a tour to support the American rock band “The Firm”.
Bonham then collaborated with former members of Led Zeppelin, which had broken up in 1980 after his father’s death. In 1988, Jason toured the US with guitarist Jimmy Page in support of his album, “Outrider”. In the same year, the members of Led Zeppelin reunited for a performance at Atlantic Records 40th Anniversary concert to take place in the Big Apple. Jason took the place of his father on the drums for the performance.
Bonham created his own band named “Bonham” which released a Led Zeppelin themed album by the name of “The Disregard of Timekeeping”. The album had a single hit song titled “Wait for You”. They released their second album, titled “Mad Hatter” which got some attention but the band soon separated after the release leaving Bonham to focus on his career as a session player.
Jason Bonham later made several appearances with many notable artists. He teamed up with Paul Rodgers for his project “Muddy Water Blues: A Tribute to Muddy Waters” which was later nominated for a Grammy Award. He then made an appearance at the notable Woodstock II music festival along with Paul Rodgers and Slash.
Bonham then recreated his own band by replacing the old vocalist Daniel MacMaster with new lead singer Marti Frederiksen. The new band was called “Motherland” and they released a new album in 1994 titled “Peace 4 Me”. Even having his own band, Jason would make special appearances for many Led Zeppelin tribute band such as Fred Zeppelin and Led Zepagain.
Jason Bonham later performed with Led Zeppelin on their reunion performance at the Ahmet Ertegun Tribute Concert at The O2 Arena in December 2007. This particular reunion performance has set the world record for the Highest Demand for Tickets for One Music Concert. Over twenty million reunion requests were posted on the internet.
Jason created a new project in 2010 which he titled as “Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Experience” which was more like a tribute for his father’s original band, Led Zeppelin. Bonham went on a world tour with this project in 2011. He maintained his place at the drums and performed brilliantly on the classic song “Stairway to Heaven” on which the Wilson sisters from the band Heart featured as lead singer and guitarist. He then toured with the Heart in 2013.
