The lineup for Jamiroquai has gone through a number of changes over the years but throughout this time, its front man has remained the same – Jason Kay. His mother Karen was a jazz singer who performed at nightclubs during the 1970s. Jason left home when he was only fifteen years old. He got into trouble with the law a lot of times and also had a near-fatal accident. The circumstances compelled him to return home. It was then that he discovered his passion for music. But Kay did not have a band to back up the music he composed. He had come up with the name Jamiroquai for his future project long before the band’s formation. The name is a combination of the music word ‘jam’ and the name of a Native American tribe – Iroquois.
Soon Jay Kay’s demos were noticed by the label Acid Jazz which eventually issued Jamiroquai’s first single When You Gonna Learn in the year 1992. Kay credited other musicians for this single as well. These include drummer Derrick McKenzie, keyboardist Toby Smith, vibraphonist Wallis Buchanan and bassist Stuart Zener. The single was a massive success and its popularity led Jamiroquai to a record deal with Sony.
Jamiroquai’s debut studio album titled Emergency on Planet Earth was released in 1993; first in the UK and Japan and a few months later in the US. It was an instant hit and entered the music charts right at the top spot, laying the foundation for an acid-jazz sound that the band would continue to build upon for the next many years.
The record spawned Top 10 singles such as Blow Your Mind and Too Young to Die. The collection was themed around issues of social consciousness. The lyrics of the songs raised serious questions about issues such as racism and the arms race among national governments. With this album, Jamiroquai became the bestselling English debut band of the year. Kay’s soulful tenor voice drew comparisons with that of the legendary Stevie Wonder and instantly caught the attention of the music world.
Breakthrough in the US
The success of the debut record was followed by The Return of the Space Cowboy in 1994. Its single Space Cowboy is Jamiroquai’s first number one hit on the US Dance chart. However, the band’s American breakthrough came with their 1996 studio album titled Travelling Without Moving. It reached the 24th spot on the Billboard 200 and gave two major hits; Cosmic Girl and Virtual Insanity. The success of the latter was largely due to its unique music video which was highly popular on MTV at the time. It portrayed front man Jason Kay in a white and blue room which wouldn’t stay still. So as the singer posed, lip synched or danced, the furniture moved around in different directions and the walls closed in. Back in the day, it was highly impressive for a band to have pulled out this concept in a music video and thus it had the fans and critics raving all over.
Jamiroquai’s eighth studio effort Automation hit the stores in 2017 - seven years since the release of the record Rock Dust Light Star. The twelve-track album is a strong comeback by the band as it showcases their maturity when they delve into topics such as societal failures. The inspiration for this album is the recognition of the increase in the use of technology and artificial intelligence in the world today. In a press release, Kay said that as owing to this, humans are beginning to forget to enjoy the simple and eloquent things in our lives such as our relationships with our loved ones.
