From Band Member to Solo Artist

James Vernon Taylor, is a Chapel Hill born guitarist, songwriter and singer known for popular numbers, ‘Fire and Rain,’ ‘You’ve Got a Friend’ and ‘Handy Man.’ He began performing in 1966 after receiving his high school diploma from the Arlington School. He relocated from Belmont to New York City to pursue a career in music and with this sought to form a band. With Joel O’Brien as the drummer, Zachary Wiesner on bass and James himself as the lead vocalist, ‘The Flying Machine’ was formed. The band performed for just a year, mainly James’ compositions ‘Don’t Talk Now’, ‘The Blues is Just a Bad Dream’, and ‘Knocking Round the Zoo’, after which the group disbanded.
