James Hillier Blount, popularly known as James Blunt, born on February 22, 1974, sings predominantly folk rock and pop rock music. This English musician, singer and song writer was previously an army officer who also served in Kosovo in 1999 before becoming famous in music industry. James’ father was a military helicopter pilot and Colonel at British Army Air Corps, whose job made their family live in Cyprus, Germany and England when James was a child. At an early age he was fascinated by his father’s profession, and passion to fly earned him a pilot’s license when he was sixteen. His early education was completed first at Elstree School, Woolhampton, Berkshire and later at Harrow School in Harrow on the Hill, Elmfield House that was located at an army bursary. British Army sponsored his higher education at Bristol University where he studied Aerospace Manufacturing Engineering, and later completed his Sociology degree in 1996. James Blunt was inducted in the British Army after completing his education as a Second Lieutenant, and was posted among Life Guards, being promoted to the rank of Captain soon. Later in 1999 he was deputed to Kosovo with NATO forces, where he served as an army reconnaissance officer. His duties at Kosovo at times involved targeting Russian forces, and he had to travel long distances along with his unit, where he used to carry his guitar along. His inmates narrate his passion for music even in those days of war and unrest where his liveliness and sense of music kept their spirits high. His famous song No Bravery was also written while on duty with NATO forces at Kosovo. Skiing has also been a passion for this young soldier, a sport that made him a champion in entire Royal Armoured Corps. He was captain of Household Cavalry Alpine Ski Team in Verbier, Switzerland. He also served as a guard at coffin of the Queen Mother when she was lying in State and also participated in funeral procession in 2002. His army career ended as he resigned after serving for six years in October 2002. After leaving army, James decided to pursue music as a career more seriously. His musical talent was already known as he learned to play piano and violin in childhood and guitar in his days at Harrow. While singing occasionally, Linda Perry, owner and founder of Custard Records heard him performing at South by Southwest Music Festival, and contacted him. Just a month later James signed and started working on his first studio album with Linda and producer Tom Rothrock. First studio album Back to Bedlam was released in 2003 that contained many songs being rated among top positions in the UK Charts. Although at first this album could not gain much recognition among music critics, who often referred to James Blunt as someone with a posh accent and not expected to gain much public popularity, the quality of music and James voice acclaimed widespread public acceptability soon. Many tracks from his debut album made it to many renowned TV series and movies. Subsequent albums by James Blunt included All the Lost Souls and Some Kind Of Trouble, released in 2007 and 2010 respectively. These albums gained much more popularity than the first one, and popularity graph for James kept rising higher and higher. Another important aspect of this artist’s life has been his tremendous efforts for humanitarian causes. While working in Kosovo, he came quite close to Medecins Sans Frontieres, also called Doctors without Borders, an organization of doctors from various countries working for people in areas struck by war and poverty. James has been working in close collaboration with this organization throughout his career so far. Also active for environmental causes, he performed at Live Earth concert at Wembley Stadium, London. He is also a patron of a charity aimed towards helping wounded British servicemen named Help For Heroes. For his commendable efforts towards charity as well as for music, James Blunt has been nominated and won many awards in his career.
