James Bay was eleven years old when he got his hands on the guitar which sparked his interest in music for the first time and he knew what he wanted to do with his life. He began to play the instrument with the help of related softwares available to him and his hobby soon became an obsession. He used to practice so hard that his neighbors began to ask him to reduce the volume of his amp while honing his skills.
When James Bay hit his teens, he formed a band with his brothers and closest friends but never fronted it. He believed that someday he would become the front member of a group and when he turned sixteen, he decided to pursue a solo career. After couple of years, Bay left his hometown of Hitchin to study guitar playing in Brighton to really start his career as a solo artist in earnest. He began to perform five nights a week in small music venues and soon secured himself a residency.
James Bay then departed from Brighton and moved to London. The artist in his own words states, “London was always in the back of my mind. In America, they talk about LA, they talk about New York, but here they talk about London.” He started to build a strong reputation and began to get gigs as a supporting act. He then got the chance to open up for the legendary group, The Rolling Stones and that turned out to be the break he was looking for. There was no turning back for him from that point onwards as he toured with some of the biggest names in music like Kodaline, ZZ Ward, Tom Odell, Beth Orton and John Newman. He also went on to perform at prestigious venues like the Los Angeles’ Troubadour and San Francisco’s Fillmore.
James Bay’s life changed forever when a patron saw him perform at the Kentish Town Pub and uploaded the performance on YouTube. It caught the attention of a Republic Records A&R executive who decided to sign him immediately.
James Bay hit the studio to work on his first album as soon as he signed the contract. The album was titled ‘Chaos and the Clam’ and it hit the music stores in 2015. The album turned out to be a massive hit and did not waste any time in reaching the number one spot on the UK Albums Chart and the number two spot on the US Top Alternative Albums chart. The album sold more than sixty thousand copies in its first week after release and announced Bay’s arrival in some style.
This young, incredibly talented star will soon be performing at the Glastonbury Festival and will also be opening for Stevie Wonder at the London’s Clapham Common. The winner of BRIT Award will also make his way to arenas all around the country as part of his road trip.
