Itzhak Perlman became fond of classical music at a very young age after listening to a classical music concert aired on a radio channel. He applied to study at the Shulamit Conservatory when he turned three but was denied the admission because he was too young to even hold a violin. But he learned it on his own and when was old enough, he studied there. He also joined the Academy of Music, located in Tel Aviv, his birth place. His first recital occurred when he was just ten years old, after which he moved to the US and studied at the Juilliard School under renowned violin pedagogue, Ivan Galamian. He also studied under Dorothy Delay, then assistant to Ivan Galamian.

At a young age, Itzhak Perlman suffered from polio because of which he walks with the help of crutches. Despite this, he plays the violin marvelously while being seated. His first performance in the USA was on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1958, appearing twice. He then performed at the Carnegie Hall in 1963 and then won the prestigious Leventritt Competition, held in 1964.

Itzhak Perlman continued to appear on American TV shows like The Tonight Show and even on Sesame Street, the famous children’s programs. He also performed live several times at the White House. He is also a singer, a basso who has sung in Puccini’s Tosca recording by EMI, a Live from Lincoln Center concert and with the New York Philharmonic, with whom he performed a tribute to the Statue of Liberty during its one hundredth anniversary. He has also perfomed outside the USA, in Warsaw, Budapest and many Eastern Europe countries. He has performed in Russia, in Leningrad and Moscow alongside IPO. In 1994, he performed in India and China. He has also shared the stage with a number of renowned musicians, such as Yo-Yo Ma, Isaac Stern, Jessye Norman, and Yuri Temirkanov.

As a soloist, he has performed on a number of movie soundtracks, such as Schindler’s List, that won the Academy Award for the Best Score. He also recorded music with cellist Yo-Yo Ma for Memoirs of Geisha. During the seventy third and seventy eighth Academy Awards, he performed live with him, playing pieces from music scores that had won the Academy Award for the Best Original Score.
