Iris Dement was born on the 5th of January, 1961 in Paragould, Arkansas, USA. She spent her childhood in California however, where she got an exposure to Gospel and folk music from an early age. She had thirteen older siblings and her parents were Pentecostal. In her teenage years, she was inspired by artists such as Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Joni Mitchell and Loretta Lynn. She went to university in Kansan City after graduating from high school. After working for a couple of restraunts as a waitress, Dement started to compose songs when she was twenty-five years of age. She performed several times at open-mic nights and in the year 1988, shifted to Nashville. Once in Nashvillle, she met Jim Rooney, who was a producer. With his help, she managed to get a contract with a recording company. Her first album was released in the year 1992 and was called Infamous Angel. The album was based around concepts such as religious skepticism, human nature, and the fact that good things don't last forever. Several singers have covered her single Let The Mystery Be which was one of the most popular songs from the album. Two of the artists who have covered the single are Alice Stuart and Natalie Merchant of 10,000 Maniacs. The latter sang the song at the show MTV Unplugged along with David Byrne. The song was also featured in the film called Little Buddha and and has gained even more acclaim due to this. It was also made a part of the recording called Campfire Songs: The Popular, Obscure and Unknown Recordings.

Dement's second album was released in the year 1994 and was titled My Life. This album carried on the concept of introspective and personal search. The album got nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of the Best Contemporary Folk Album. Her next album was released in the year 1996 and was named The Way I Should. The album is regarded by many as the singer's most political album due to the fact that the album contained a lot of songs dealing with political problems such as government, sexual abuse, Vietnam, religion etc. There was a gap after that when no album was released for several years. Then, in the year 2004, she finally released an album again. The name of the album was Lifeline and it also became extremely popular.

Several artists have performed duets with Dement. Some of them include Emmylou Harris, John Prine and Steve Earle. She has also performed for albums of various other famous artists. She has appeared several times on A Prairie Home Companion as well as in the movie Songcatcher, which was released in the year 2000. She played the role of Rose Gentry in the film and sang for the soundtrack as well. Dement has sung a version of Leaning on the Everlasting Arms for the movie by Coen brothers called True Grit which was released in the year 2010.
