From a very young age India.Arie had a keen interest in music. She moved to Atlanta with her family when she was 13 years old and after completing high school, started to play the guitar. Due to her interest in music, she was even involved in the Atlanta urban music scene which eventually led to the creation of the independent label, "EarthShare". Through this label, Arie came out with a compilation CD containing all of her first songs. Her light-hearted yet empowering music appealed to the listeners which later encouraged her to release her studio albums.
India.Arie has released five studio albums so far, all of which have managed to impress the critics and fans alike. Her first record, "Acoustic Soul" came out in March 2001 and hit the tenth position on the Billboard chart. The album sold 2,180,000 copies in the US as well as 3,000,000 copies worldwide resulting in double platinum status. In 2002, her second album, "Voyage to India" was released and debuted at the sixth position on the Billboard 200, as well as grabbing the first spot on the R&B chart.
