In the year 2007, it was an Off Broadway production and moved to the Broadway production in the year 2008.

The musical has gained massive popularity in a very short span of time. After the supreme success of the musical, a feature film is expected to be adapted from it; Universal Pictures has announced its release during the year 2011. Some of its episodes have been aired on TV by Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) in a series named as “Great Performances”.  Its fame had led it to take up the national tours as well. Lin Manuel Marinda is the person who was the pioneer for this theatre show, and shaped the music and lyrics whereas it is based on the book by Quiara Algeria Hudes. Right in the beginning, the musical got unbelievable appreciation in the form of awards and recognition. In the year 2007, it won the Obie Award, Theatre World Award, Clarence Derwent Award, two Outer Critics Circle Awards; for best musical and choreography. Lucille Lortel Awards and Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Performance and Outstanding Choreography were awarded. Year 2008 marked even more recognition. It was awarded with four Tony Awards for the Best Musical, Best Lyrics, Best Choreography and Best Orchestrations. It was nominated for thirteen Tony awards. The Musical is the Grammy Award Winner for the Best Musical Show Album.
