Becoming the talk of the town
Illenium was born in San Francisco as Nicholas D. Miller. He was interested in dance music from the start which led to him producing electronic beats for the first time in 2008. Through excessive experimentation, Illenium finally developed an interesting sound by fusing different genres like, dubstep, trap and progressive house. In 2012, he began to work on music more passionately after attending a Bassnectar concert.
In 2013, he moved to Denver and began to release music under the moniker, Illenium. When asked how he decided his stage name, he had this to say, “It’s kind of an anticlimactic story, there’s not really anything on the name. Pretty much the whole actual meaning behind everything is the symbol, the phoenix symbol, just kind of telling that story of rising after you fall, and hope and all that. It’s inspiring when you have that kind of symbol with this music, so that’s hopefully what it’s achieving.”
Illenium got things started by churning out his first self-titled extended play which was issued by Prep School Recordings. The EP featured three songs, A Million Pieces, Daydream and Escape. These songs became major hits as far as club music was concerned.
On January 12, 2014, Illenium came out with his sophomore extended play, ‘Risen.’ The EP gave four beautifully crafted songs, Up, For Truth, Souls and Drop Our Hearts which featured the vocals from the very talented pop singer, Sirma. The latter became an instant hit and that led to him releasing the sequel of the track on April 24, 2014. Called, Drop Our Hearts (Part II), it has been streamed more than two hundred thousand times on SoundCloud. Illenium followed that up by releasing his first collaborative EP with Said the Sky and Christina Soto titled, ‘Painted White.’ It arrived in the stores on July 21, 2015.
Illenium then decided to put out his first studio effort, ‘Ashes.’ The album came out on February 15, 2016 and peaked at the sixth spot on the Dance/Electronic Albums chart. It gathered positive reviews from the critics including YourEDM.com.
Illenium’s second studio album, ‘Awake’ was released in the fall of 2017. This LP became a huge hit and featured a single, Feel Good which was a collaboration with Gryffin and Daya. Illenium also released the music video of this song which has already been viewed more than eight million times on YouTube. In addition, the album landed at the third spot on the Dance/Electronic Albums.
