Tracy Marrow, popularly known as Ice-T, was born on the 16th of February 1958 in Newark, New Jersey. Ice-T lost his mother to heart attack when he was in third grade and spent the early years with his father in Summit, New Jersey. Four years later his father suffered a fatal heart attack as well and the young Marrow had to move to his paternal aunt’s place in South Central Los Angeles. Marrow was enrolled in the Palms Junior School and finally made it to the Crenshaw High School in the district of Crenshaw, Los Angeles.
Tracy Marrow’s initial gangster and criminal influences stemmed from his high school gang life and although he wasn’t formally a gang member, he often hanged out with these kids reciting rhymes of the poet pimp Iceberg Slim. Slim’s pen name became Marrow’s inspiration and he was soon being called Ice-T. The future artist also staged his first live performance among his high school group The Precious Few of Crenshaw High School.
After spending a couple of years as a jewelry robber and a gangster, Ice-T finally joined the US Army. Four years later the to-be singer left the army and began working as a pimp. However, his addiction to the illicit lifestyle was gradually fading and the singer reached the turning-point of his life when taking a friend’s advice, he tested his luck by working as a DJ at local clubs. Finding success in this new role, he became popular and the gifted artist eventually landed into a deal with Sire Records and released his debut album “Rhyme Pays” in 1987. The album featured rolling and sparse beats and Ice-T perfected his party style of singing. His musical and lyrical abilities were epitomized in his single “Colors” that was part of a movie of the same name by Dennis Hopper. The track propelled the artist to fame and Ice-T became an industry name.
