Rising to the top
Ice Cube started his career by joining the rap group, C.I.A. They released only one single, My Posse before disbanding. Then, Cube found a spot on the hip-hop band, N.W.A. Once onboard, he penned down tracks for their landmark album, ‘Straight Outta Compton’ which was mentioned in the Rolling Stones’ list of the, ‘500 Greatest Albums of All Time.’ Everything was going great for Ice Cube but he found himself at odds with N.W.A’s manager, Jerry Heller which led to him quitting the band.
In 1989, Cube decided to launch his solo career and recorded a song, AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted which came out in 1990. It became a hit almost instantly. This built anticipation for his debut record of the same name which arrived on May 16, 1990. It went on to sell more than one million copies in the United States and received rave reviews from the critics. It was mentioned in Spins’ list of the, ‘Top 90 Albums of the 90s.’ Moreover, Rolling Stones’ also included it in its list of, ‘The Essential Recording of the 90s.’
On the road to superstardom
His second record, ‘Death Certificate’ arrived in the stores on October 29, 1991. The record impressed the critics and was praised by a host of different publications including, The Source, The Village Voice, New Musical Express and Vibe. In addition, it recorded platinum level sales in the United States.
Ice Cube reached the pinnacle of success when he dropped his third album, ‘The Predator.’ It became his only record to top the Billboard 200 to date. ‘The Predator’ was certified double platinum by the RIAA and received positive response from the Entertainment Weekly which described the album as, “Ice Cube's strongest, most cohesive work yet.” It also made it to the book, ‘1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.’
Making his mark
Ice Cube didn’t slow down after the release of his first three hit studio albums. In fact, he went on to release records like, ‘War & Peace Vol. 1 (The War Disc)’ and ‘Lethal Injection’ both of which sold over one million copies in the U.S. The former LP peaked at the first spot on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and received three stars out of four from Los Angeles Times.
