Starting from the unique sound they developed, to the long list of innovative albums they released; Huey Lewis And the News have always been accustomed to doing things their own way. They arrived at a time when rock and roll music was the most popular genre in the world and they managed to put a personal spin on it, making millions of fans along the way.

Finding their feet

Huey Lewis was a vocalist and harmonica player of great skill, who decided in 1972 to recruit like-minded musicians to form a band. He convinced Sean Hopper (keyboard), Bill Gibson (drums), Johnny Colla (rhythm guitar), Mario Cipollina (bass guitar) and Chris Hayes (lead guitar) to form the American Express. The name was then changed to the current one in 1979.

It was also around this time that they released their first single, “Exodisco” and their debut, self titled album. Both did not fare too well commercially and it wasn't until their 1982 album, “Picture This” that the band became famous.

Flying high

Their second album was certified gold and made it to number thirteen on the Billboard charts. Its follow up did even better and “Sports” became their highest selling album to date, with ten million sales. Since then, they have released nine albums in total, four of which have made it to the Billboard top twenty and five of those have recorded gold and platinum sales.
