Formed in Minnesota in 2000, the group was initially a hobby for the five founding members who were in their teens at that time. The members included Dan Lemke, Darren Scruggs, Matt Atwood, Chris Rupp and his brother Adam Rupp. The band eventually gained a fan following and after some years they had enough popularity to pursue their music dream properly. The group’s line up changed over the years and the current lineup was established in 2008.
All the members of the band had some sort of formal music training. Music director Chris Rupp, along with Tim Foust and Austin Brown, composes and arranges their songs. Both Adam and Chris Rupp have acquired bachelor’s degrees in music. Adam Rupp also plays several instruments like the drums, guitar and piano but his principal instrument is the trumpet.
Home Free has been availing almost every opportunity of performing they have got, whether it was a State fair or a County fair. They also performed in several colleges and in theaters across the country just to gain experience and popularity. This was all before they conquered the Sing-Off in 2013. It can be said that they got the champion’s spotlight due to their swelling fan following they amassed during the competition and by hitting the road. The band had previously auditioned thrice for The Sing-Off and was rejected each time, but when the band added Foust and Brown and changed their music style to country, they got a spot in the fourth season of The Sing-Off Season and came out triumphant. The winning prize for the competition was a handsome one million dollars and a recording contract with Sony BMG.
The band has released seven music albums “From the Top”, “Kickin It Old School”, “Christmas Vol 1 and 2”, “Live From the Road”, “Crazy Life”, and “Full of Cheer”. Their album Crazy Life was their first official album and was released by the current roster of the band. It was released digitally in January 2014. The actual release date of the album was February 18th 2014 and it sold more than twenty six thousand copies. It reached number eight on the US Top Country Chart and number forty on the Billboard 200.
Their next album was released in October 2014 via Sony and its sales reached around thirty thousand copies. It was ranked at number twelve on the US Hot Country Songs Chart and peaked at number sixty five on the Billboard 200. Their best single from this album was "Angels We Have Heard on High" which peaked on the top of the Hot Country Chart at number thirty and the Billboard 200 at number one hundred and eighteen. Other famous songs include “I'll Be Home for Christmas”, “Any Way the Wind Blows”, “Wake Me Up”, and “A Little Bit of Everything”.
