Early Years & Struggling Phase
Hobo Johnson went to the John F. Kennedy High School. As a child he did not have many friends and was quite an introvert. He occupied himself in playing video games to pass his time but found no use of it. The realization led Johnson to sell his games and consoles in order to buy music equipment. It was in his mid teens that he decided to pursue music as a career choice. But Johnson was no overnight success.
He went through quite a few struggles and rejections before he got the attention and recognition he deserved. While talking about his high school days Johnson himself described his junior year there as a troubled year. He got into a group that used to drink a lot. Often he would show up at school drunk and it kept getting worse with time.
He accumulated several DUIs and ended up in juvenile hall. Here, representatives of the Auburn Hip Hop Congress paid visits and talked to the people serving time in juvie. According to Hobo Johnson it was this time period that changed his perspective of life. The meetings proved fruitful and provided Johnson the inspiration he needed to pull himself out of the situation and pursue music as a full-time career. Slowly and steadily he polished his skills and became much more articulate, creative and composed. He had made up his mind that he would not to go back to school or get a job. He simply wanted to be a musician.
Lopes returned to his father’s house. But somehow found it hard to adjust there. He had gotten used to the stability and silence of juvie.
The Talented Musician
Frank Lopes soon started to open mics and perform all day long in the streets. Soon people started noticing him and he received a great deal of appreciation for his skills. This gave him the confidence and encouragement he needed at the time.
One of the first few songs he was praised for was about starving for success in his career. In an interview Lopes said, “Finally, after four years of no one ever liking it, I was like, 'Yo, I think this is my time. I could feel it in my soul. I was ready.”
Johnson later said that his fear now is going back to a time when no matter how much he worked hard on his music, it went unnoticed. He says that it is this fear that keeps him going. The lyrics of his songs are based on his thoughts about loneliness, relationships with parents, love and fear – everything he has experienced in his own life.
The Rise of Hobo Johnson
The Rise of Hobo Johnson is the debut album release by the band. On this nine-track record, Lopes has been more honest about his life than one could imagine for a debut album. The lyrics range from topics such as sex, girls and the need to be loved to his divorce and other troubled relationships in the life.
The album opens with the song Sex In the City in which Lopes sings about super hot girls who are going out with not so hot guys, his backache and some other tricky subjects. It ends with the song The Ending in which Lopes literally thanks the listeners for going through the album.
