Hershey Symphony Orchestra is one of the leading volunteer orchestras in the US. The orchestra strives to create a rich cultural experience for personal and community enjoyment and enrichment. The symphony offers a range of events that take place throughout the year. Its concert programs include a variety of music coming from different periods and styles. It has got around 80 accomplished musicians from central and eastern Pennsylvania. These musicians are voluntarily contributing their time and talent for this orchestra.
Hershey orchestra has got romantic, classical, contemporary, baroque, Broadway, symphonic and much more for its audiences as well as musicians who are exposed to a wide variety of music literature. The orchestra also puts in special efforts to promote and honor the local talent by featuring local organizations and musicians as guests in its concerts and annual festivals. The Hershey Symphony performances which take place throughout the year have weekly rehearsals. Their yearly schedule includes an annual POPS event that features all the famous POPS artists from the U.S. It’s a special event that takes place at the Hershey Theatre.
Other annual programs by Hershey Symphony Orchestra include Young Artist Competition and a benefit gala named "Shall We Dance." The aim of the Young Artist Competition is to foster the young creative minds and nurture the musical abilities of youth residing in Central Pennsylvania. This program is only for students from grade seven to grade eleven who can submit their recordings to the Hershey Symphony. The shortlisted students are invited for live auditions in front of a panel comprised of qualified professionals. This competition takes palce every March.
Hershey Symphony Orchestra also organizes four subscription shows at the Hershey Theatre and Hershey Symphony Big Band, the popular spinoff by the orchestra that has been entertaining its fans across Pennsylvania. The Big Band was formed in 2000 as an offshoot of Hershey and became popular in Central Pennsylvania very fast. The band is so much in demand for special events happening in the area such as corporate events and weddings. The Big Band has performed in a number of prestigious venues like Hershey Park Amphitheatre, the Harrisburg Capitol, the Hershey Lodge & Convention Center and the Hershey Hotel.
Apart from focusing on its vision of creating a cultural experience for everyone through music, Hershey Symphony Orchestra also plays a significant role in the music education of youth. For this purpose, it sponsors annual programs for youth which includes Festival Strings program. This program offers an opportunity for mid-school children of Central Pennsylvania to meet other kids and make a temporary string orchestra. The orchestra is then made to perform in a formal concert in front of public. The major benefit of this program is to train the young musicians who are not skilled enough to become a part of a formal youth orchestra.
Among its other special events at community locations are the well-known summer Outdoor POPS concerts takes place in three cities which are Hershey, Mt. Gretna and Lebanon. Most of their concerts happen at Hershey Theatre which was built in 1933. The idea of Hershey was conceived by the philanthropist and entrepreneur, Milton S. Hershey who is also the man behind landmarks such as Hershey Stadium, Hotel Hershey and Hershey Park Arena.
