The Heckensaw Boys is an American string band from Charlottesville, Virginia that has been active as one of the leading groups in Americana music since 1999. Their members today are guitarist Ward Harrison, fiddle and bass player Ferd Lionel Moyse, bassist John Miller, drummer Brian Gorby, guitarist David Sickmen and banjo player Ben Townsend. They have been influence by many great musicians and have gone on to influence many more musicians and bands. The band is known for music that often combines old time music with bluegrass, country and even rock n’ roll, with a special focus on songwriting. Their live shows have been described as rowdy and energetic by many a member of the press and are known mainly a touring and live act that regularly visits many American and European cities. Their discography is eight records large; five of the full studio albums and three of the EPs. They have graced the stages of such renowned festivals as FloydFest, Telluride, All Good Music Festival and Bonnaroo in the US. In Europe, they have performed at Belfast’s The Open House Festival and Norway’s Bergenfest.
The band was founded in 1999 by four band members who were living in Charlottesville, Virginia at the time, with them of them having previously met at Harrisonburg. Each of them was playing in a local band with some of the earliest members of the band going on to found such groups as Old Crow Medicine Show. Four of the members, Sickmen, Peloso, Bullington and St. Ours met at Charlottesville’s Miller’s restaurant met to watch a concert and decided to start a band, developing their sound by busking in Virginia.
In 2000, the Heckensaw Boys were twelve musicians large and they began the Get Some Tour in a GMC motorcoach dubbed The Dirty Bird. They then took part in the Unlimited Sunshine Tour. In 2002, they performed with Cake, The Flaming Lips, De La Soul, Kinky and Modest Mouse, amongst others, as part of a tour. In 2003, they performed as a backing band to Charlie Louvin, a Country Music Hall of Fame inductee in his national tours and went on to open for Modest Mouse, a band one of their members would later join. Their following grew as they toured American cities, performing with bands such as Railroad Earth, Cracker and Camper Van Beethoven.
In Europe, they visited many cities, starting from London and going on to Dublin, Antwerp, Brussels, Utrecht and Amsterdam. Within the US, they played in such major cities as Seattle, San Francisco, Asheville, Knoxville, Minneapolis, Portland, new York, Chicago, Atlanta and Los Angeles. They also played at such music festivals as Bonnaroo Music Festival twice, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, All Good Music festival twice, Floydfest in 2003, Pickathon, Pukkelpop in Belgium in 2005 and Bergenfest twice in 2007 and 2008. In 2012, they toured many European countries, visiting Germany, Poland, France, Belgium, Ireland, Scotland, England, and the Czech Republic.
With a name as revolutionary as their music, they often draw large crowds to their concerts with large numbers of Heckensaw Boys tickets sold. Their name is in itself a description of music played on a mandolin, known also as a hack, and the fiddle, known as a saw. Starting out as a joke, the name grew and stuck to the band. They have also released a number of albums through Valley Entertainment records, with these albums positively praised for having ‘catchy melodies’ by the likes of Pitchfork magazine. The Daily Page has called their music ‘celebratory’ with The Daily Profess praising it as ‘classic’.
