J.K Rowling: The brain behind Harry Potter

Born in 1965, J.K Rowling came up with the idea of penning down the first Harry Potter novel in 1995. After completing the manuscript, she asked Bryony Evans to review the first three chapters of the book. Impressed by her work, he encouraged Rowling to submit the manuscript to different publishing houses and she did just. Unfortunately all of them rejected it except for the editor of Bloomsbury, Barry Cunningham. Bloomsbury agreed to publish the book and on June 26, 1997, ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ hit the shelves. It became a New York Times bestseller and earned her the British Book Award in the category of ‘Children’s Book of the Year.’

J.K Rowling wrote the sequel, ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets’ which was published on June 2, 1998. This novel made its mark and earned her the Nestlé Smarties Book Prize. Considering the impact that her books had made, Warner Bros decided to convert Rowling’s work into movies and purchased the film rights to the first two novels the same year. Though, it would take Warner Bros three years to debut the Harry Potter movie, J.K Rowling went on to extend the series in the meantime by releasing two more books, ‘Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban’ and ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.’ She ended the series by writing seven Harry Potter novels in total.

Harry Potter: The films

On November 16, 2001, Warner Bros released the first film, ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.’ It starred Daniel Radcliffe as the lead protagonist, Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley and Emma Watson as Hermione Granger. They all remained part of the series till the end. The flick not only turned out to be a huge commercial and critical success but was also nominated for three Academy Awards in the categories of, ‘Best Art Direction,’ ‘Best Original Score’ and ‘Best Costume Design.’

Since 2001, Warner Bros has come out with seven Harry Potter films including, ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.’ It was released in 2002 and became the second highest grossing film of that year. The movie earned three BAFTA Award nominations and received tremendous response from many famous publications including, Entertainment Weekly and Los Angeles Times.
