Where It All Started
Dan Griffith, better known as Gryffin, trained to be a classical pianist as a kid while also learning to play the guitar at a very young age. In college, he started playing in different bands with the aim of honing his craft. This was the beginning of a journey that would see him become a record producer and a popular DJ.
As an electrical engineering student at the University of Southern California, Gryffin would spend almost all his free time in his dorm room working on music of different kinds. At that point, he simply made music with the belief that his friends would be playing it at different parties and get-togethers. In his own words, he could never have imagined that those little sessions in the solitude of his hostel room would lead to all of this.
During the last few years, Gryffin has been recognized for his remixes of some very popular numbers including “Animals” and “Years & Years” by Maroon 5. The remix of “Talking Body” by Tove Lo was also quite well-received and critically acclaimed. Many say he has been on the verge of a major breakthrough in recent times, while for others he has already arrived on the scene in great fashion.
From the time Gryffin’s world debut came at the SnowGlobe Music Festival in 2015, he hasn’t looked back and continues to go from strength to strength. That impressive performance put him on the international music map. His love of music combined with his artistic prowess was on full display that night as he wowed the audience with his wide range of skills on the guitar, keyboard, and other instruments. You have a chance to witness the gifted DJ in action by getting your hands on some Gryffin tickets.
After garnering lots of acclaim remixing some very popular singles from leading acts like Maroon 5 and Tove Lo as well as releasing four singles, Gryffin’s debut album Gravity came out recently. It is an extended display of Gryffin’s full range of abilities as a live instrument player and comprises of a constant dance music format.
A full range of instruments including guitars, keyboards, drum pads and synths have been made use of on all the tracks. The typical energy of a DJ set also shines through while listening to the tracks on the album. The leading single “Nobody Compares to You” was ranked number 11 on the US Dance Digital chart and number 20 on the US Dance chart.
Before the release of his debut album, Gryffin’s debut single “Heading Home” had already put the gifted DJ firmly in the spotlight. Featuring Aussie musician Josef Salvat, the song topped the Spotify Viral 50 chart while the Billboard Twitter Emerging Artists chart had it ranked at the 5th place.
Following the success of “Heading Home,” Gryffin got to work on his second non-album single and released “Whole Heart” a few months later. In the DJ’s own words, this song was a major step in his musical evolution as it represented a continuous songwriting depth and a growing maturity of sound. It can be said that this song was a “coming of age” moment for Gryffin. On the whole, Gryffin calls himself a “melodic house artist” and all his music productions are created in that same style.
Having played the piano and guitar from a very young age, Gryffin puts his command on either instrument to great use in his musical creations. The sounds from both instruments are expertly incorporated in an organic-electric hybrid style of music.
