Born on the 2nd of July, 1949 in Fairfield, Iowa, Brown had an early exposure to music due to his mother being an electric guitar player and his father being a preacher at a local Church, where music and Gospel were taught as a course of conduct. When he was eighteen years of age, he got the opportunity to sing professionally for the first time in the Gerde's Folk City in New York City. He had to run hootenannies, which are a type of get-togethers of folk musicians. One year after his first job, he moved from his hometown to Portland, from where he moved to Los Angeles next and then to Las Vegas. He got the job of a ghostwriter at Las Vegas, where he worked for Buck Ram. Ram was the creator of the band called The Platters and Brown went on tours with them several times. After a few years, Brown left the band and moved back to his hometown where he started to write songs, whilst he played different gigs around the club scene.
Greg Brown went on various tours in the 1980s and gradually, his reputation grew because of his performance on A Prairie Home Companion, which he gave several times on different tours across the country. He was also nominated for the Grammy awards for his performance. He formed a recording company of his own called Red House Records. The name of the label was based on his home in Iowa, where he had spent his entire childhood. Various artists have worked with his company, and more than two hundred songs have been recorded by musicians including Eliza Gilkyson, John McCutcheon, Pat Donohue, Lucy Kaplansky, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, John Gorka and many others as well.
Brown has released over twenty-four albums over the course of his career, including Songs of Innocence and of Experience which was released in the year 1986. In this album, Brown used the poetry of William Blake to make songs, instead of his own. The album turned out to be a success and the audience loved the poetry of William Blake put to music. In the year 1989, Greg Brown released another album by the name of One Big Town, which became an instantaneous hit. Rolling Stone magazine gave the album three and a half stars and it topped the charts at AAA. The National Association of Independent Record Distributions (NAIRD) also gave Brown his first Indie Award because of the album and he got ranked in The Gavin Report's Americana. In the year 1994, he released another album which was named The Poet Game. This album earned him one more Indie Award from NAIRD. Futher In, which was released in the year 1996, became a finalist for another Indie Award, but did not manage to win it. However, it got four stars in the review of the Rolling Stone magazine.
Brown has amazing songwriting skills and he is an extremely gifted musician. Some of his songs have been performed by the likes of Michael Johnson, Willie Nelson, Mary Chaplin Carpenter, Carlos Santana and Shawn Colvin. His album Slant 6 Mina which was released in the year 1997 got nominated for the Grammy Awards. He also released one of his performances on CD through his record label. The CD was named One Night.
