About Grace VanderWaal
Born near Kansas City, Grace showed her interest in music from a young age. She began composing songs at the mere age of three, using a wireless microphone. As she entered her preteen years, she found inspiration by watching movies and trying to imagine what particular characters must be feeling. This enabled her to start writing songs from such a tender age. With the passage of time, she started developing interest in musical instruments as well. The first one was ukulele – she was inspired to learn how to play this when she saw a family friend playing it and also after she saw a video of Twenty One Pilots on YouTube. VanderWaal learned how to play ukulele herself by watching online videos. She also played the saxophone in the marching band of her school.
America’s Got Talent
VanderWaal got involved in the professional world of music when, in July 2016, she auditioned for America’s Got Talent, with her original song, “I Don’t Know My Name”. She managed to get Howie Mandel’s “golden buzzer” and was called “the next Taylor Swift” by Simon Cowell. VanderWaal continued performing her original songs throughout the duration of the show and got positive remarks from all the judges repeatedly. Her performance in the quarterfinals in August, 2016, was another original number called “Beautiful Thing”, a song written by her sister. Her voice has been called multiple things, such as “quirky”, “timelessly soulful” and “endearingly croaky”. Her catchy and emotional songs, with a strong infusion of raw and folk sounds made her a force to be reckoned with during and after the show.
On September 14th, 2016, VanderWaal performed “I Don’t Know My Name” for the final episode. At the end of the broadcast, she was announced as the winner of season 11, becoming the second female and the second child act winner in the history of the show. Her audition video for the show has accumulated more than 70 million views on YouTube and was one of the most trending videos of 2016.
After America’s Got Talent
Soon after her appearance on America’s Got Talent, VanderWaal’s success started to grow. She made an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in September 2016. Following this, she headlines four amazing sold-out concerts in the PH Showroom at the Las Vegas Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino, alongside other finalists from America’s Got Talent. It wasn’t long after this that the young starlet struck a recording deal with Columbia Records and began recording sessions for her debut EP, Perfectly Imperfect.
The EP peaked on the Billboard 200 albums chart at No.9 and was the best selling EP of 2016. Her vocal abilities were praised by Billboard magazine which found them to be “reminiscent of a Taylor Swift – Regina Spektor hybrid”.
VanderWaal promoted her EP with multiple performances and appearances, including a halftime show at the New York Knicks game at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
