The Jamaican singer and songwriter is also a producer, model and actress, making her debut in singing in 1977 and specialized in a variety of genres including R&B, disco, rock and reggae.

Childhood and Family

Born in the Spanish Town of Jamaica in 1948, Beverly Grace Jones was raised by her grandparents. Her parents worked in the US, therefore Jones and her siblings had to stay with their grandparents. Raised in a strict religious environment, Jones was a shy child with hardly any friends at school. At the age of 13, Jones and her siblings went to Syracuse, New York to live with their parents. She enrolled in the Onondaga Community College to pursue her majors in Spanish but fate had other plans for the future star and she soon went to Philadelphia to work with a drama professor who offered her a role. When she turned 18, Jones came back to New York and signed a deal with the Wilhelmina Modeling agency.

Musical Endeavors

Following a couple of modeling stints in Paris, the gifted Grace Jones decided to take a chance with singing. In 1977 Jones released her debut album “Portfolio” with producer Tom Moulton under the Island Records label. The album featured disco songs like “I Need a Man” and “Sorry”, the former being the singer’s earliest club hit. Moulton and Jones went on to release the singer’s sophomore album titled “Fame” in 1978. The album included famous singles like “Do or Die” and “Am I Ever Gonna Fall in Love in New York City”. The album was an all-time favorite among North American clubbers and hit the top 10 on US Hot Dance Club Play as well as the Canadian Dance Charts. The duo released Jones’ third and last disco album “Muse” in 1979. The album received modest reviews although singles like “On Your Knees” and “I’ll Find my Way to You” were liked by many.

The New-Wave Movement

In the early 1980s, the US music industry saw a large shift from disco to the new-wave genre with its roots in punk rock. Jones quickly moved to singing in the new genre and gave some of her career’s most notable works. Her albums “Warm Leatherette” in 1980 and “Nightclubbing” in 1981 are one of her commercially most successful releases, with the latter making it to the Top 5 in a total of four countries. It became the singer’s highest ranked collection, making way to the US Billboard and R&B charts. “Nightclubbing” debuted at number 1 on NME’s Album of the Year and was also ranked at number 40 by the Slant Magazine. The album proved to be her magnum opus and the artist was soon to release a string of popular albums like “Slave to the Rhythm” and “Hurricane”.

A Versatile Artist

A singer, lyricist, model and actress, Grace Jones is good at all four. She has performed in a couple of low-budget films apart from her famous appearances in commercial hits like “Boomerang” and “A View to a Kill”. Above all, Jones is a musician endowed with exceptional vocal and lyrical skills, giving her fans classic singles like “Pull Up to the Bumper”, “I’ve Seen That Face Before” and “Demolition Man”.
