Age is just a number. It doesn’t matter if you’re too young or too old; if you truly put your mind to something, you will find that anything is possible. The world is full of people accomplishing amazing feats by overcoming insurmountable obstacles. An example being, Johanna Quaas, who at ninety years of age is the world’s oldest gymnast. Now there is yet another example of determination and perseverance. A group of seniors, all above sixty years of age, will soon take to the stage to let out the hidden dancers within them in this exclusive stage production known as ‘Gotta Dance.’
The New Jersey Nets have long been considered a true basketball powerhouse. Now known as the Brooklyn Nets, the team was formed over forty five years ago and in that time they have managed to win quite a few championships, including two league titles. The franchise itself has also grown over all this time and today has a cheerleading squad as well as a kids dancing team.
However, back in 2007 the management of the team decided to do something different, which they believed would not only increase their sales but also earn them a lot of goodwill in the community. They decided to set up a dance troupe, but one which would only feature people above the age of sixty. Not only that, the group would only perform to Hip Hop dance numbers, with plenty of popping and locking involved. They would be called the ‘NJ NETSationals.’
The Nets held open auditions at their training center and the turnout was significant. Very soon they had managed to select twelve women and one man for the squad, who would be coached by long term Nets’ dancers Jaclyn and Marla.
As the team was being assembled, the buzz surrounding this event was also growing and it caught the attention of three times Tony Award winning producer Dori Berinstein. She had previously made two highly acclaimed documentaries and was looking to make a third. In the NJ NETSationals she found a story that inspired her. She signed an agreement with the Nets and started filming the incredible exploits of the dancers and their attempts to learn the completely alien hip hop dance routines.
The documentary film, titled ‘Gotta Dance’ came out in 2008 to worldwide acclaim. The story of the sixty plus year old dance troupe brought smiles to people’s faces and gave hope to others. It was officially selected for several prominent film festivals around the world including the Tribeca and the Sarasota film festivals. It also won the award for the best documentary at the Palm Beach and Floating film festivals.
The Next Step
Keeping in mind the amazing response that ‘Gotta Dance’ received from all quarters, Berinstein, a veteran of the world of stage, decided to take this incredible story to Broadway. Since then work has been underway to make this one of the most unforgettable shows in the history of the stage.
Leading the cast will be André De Shields. A multiple time Tony Award nominee, his career goes back over forty five years and includes performances in both Broadway and off Broadway productions. On top of that, he has also worked in several television shows and films. He is joined by popular television and film actress Stefanie Powers, as well as an amazing cast of industry stalwarts that will have you jumping out of your seats with excitement.
Now that this amazing production is finally ready to premiere on the stage, here is your chance to watch the scintillating story for yourself. All you need are your Gotta Dance tickets and you can be a part of this stunning journey live as well.
