A lot of artists spend years trying to make their mark in the industry and even then quite a few fail to do so. The music industry is full of people who failed to make the cut. Then there are artists like Got7 who make it all look so easy.
The Origins of Got7
Got7 is a boy band which was formed in South Korea by JYP Entertainment in 2014. The seven members of the band hail from different places, including the United States, Thailand, South Korea and Hong Kong.
When JYP initially announced that they were about to debut a new boy band which will feature members from a wide range of nationalities, interest was piqued regarding the band. The seven members include Mark, a Chinese-American from the United States, BamBam from Thailand, Jackson from Hong Kong, and Jinyoung, JB, Yugyeom and Youngjae from South Korea.
This was a big deal for JYP Entertainment because they hadn’t debuted a new band in over six years, since the debut of 2PM in 2008.
The Musical Style of Got7
Got7 is a unique group for a number of different reasons, including their eclectic musical style. The band is essentially a hip-hop group which specializes in a very specific genre known as martial arts tricking. This dynamic style blends together a wide variety of martial arts skills, as well as kicking and turning movements and blends them with b-boying. This acrobatic style and flare immediately sets the band apart from other musical acts.
Got7’s Musical Releases
After JYP Entertainment announced the debut of Got7, the band was pressed to release their first bit of music. On January 20, 2014 they released their first EP which was titled Got It?
The album was an instant success and soared to the number one spot on the Billboard World Album’s chart. It also reached number two on the Gaon Album Chart. Just a few days before the release of their EP, the band made their debut on live TV on a music show titled M Countdown. They performed their hit single ‘Girls, Girls, Girls’.
All this exposure was doing wonders for the band. The favorable response they got from fans led them to signing a contract with Sony Music Entertainment in Japan, where the record label organized a showcase for Got7 in front of over 9,000 fans!
Got7 Builds Their Popularity
In the summer of 2014, Got7 released their second EP called Got Love. This EP saw the band change their style a little bit and venture away from their flying acrobatics. Instead, they debuted a new colorful and brighter image.
Their EPs did so well that by November of that same year, Got7 released their first full length studio album called Identify. The lead single from the album, "Stop Stop It" did very well and peaked at the number four spot on the Billboard World Digital Songs Chart.
In 2016, the band released their second full length studio album, Flight Log: Turbulence. This album also did very well. It peaked at the number one spot on the Billboard World Albums Chart as well as number seven on the Billboard Top Heatseakers Albums Chart.
The same year, they also released their first Japanese album called Moriagatteyo. The album featured twelve original songs, all of which are in Japanese. It also featured Japanese versions of many of their hit singles from their previous albums and EPs.
