When you think about watching a band perform live, you imagine seeing some skinny guys or girls jumping around on the stage rocking their respective instruments and the lead singer captivating the audience with his charisma. You can imagine being able to see your favorite band up close and if you’re lucky, even shaking their hand or catching them during a stage dive. What would you imagine a live concert will be like if your favorite band was not even real? That is the case with the British sensation called Gorillaz.
Gorillaz is a project that was devised by British alternate rock band Blur’s lead singer Damon Albarn and cartoonist Jamie Hewlett. The band consists of four main members who are all cartoon characters that live in a fictional universe and have their own fictional lives in that universe. The viewer or listener can follow the stories and lives of the band through their website or many different media like their music videos. None of the voices behind the different cartoon characters ever show themselves and apart from the Damon Albarn, none of the members actually provide vocals to an ongoing character. Albarn plays the lead singer and keyboardist 2D while the other three members Murdoc, Noodle and Russel Hobbs play various instruments and are voiced by various artists while their instrumentation is also provided by different musicians on every song.
The duo conceived the idea of this unreal music band when they lived together in their London flat in 1998. The concept behind having a band made out of fictional members was to comment on the celebrity culture in the music business. The creators wanted to show that just good music can prosper and there is no need of attached celebrity or personalities that are famous just for being famous. The back stories of each band member are a sarcastic commentary on the way the music business works and the exaggerated expressions and stories are one of the biggest attractions of the band.
The band’s music is really Damon Albarn flexing his composing muscles. While Albarn was responsible for a lot of his old band Blur’s hits, he is in full control of the music made by the Gorillaz and is responsible for all musical endeavors of the band. The genre of the music created by this band cannot be specified as each album sees a bit of a shift in their musical style. Albarn has totally gone all over the world to bring together every genre of music and cram them into carefully crafted albums that give out an intelligent pop sound. The subject matter of the lyrics varies from abstract to specific issues and minute details. The band also tends to use musicians and singers from all over the world and from every genre to feature on their albums. Some of the acts that have featured on the band’s songs include Snoop Dogg, Mos Def, De La Soul, Bobby Womack and Del da Funky Homosapien among many others.
The Gorillaz have released a total of three albums since their self-titled debut album in 2001. Gorillaz went on to sell 7 million copies worldwide and spawned a number of hit singles. The second outing for the band was with Demon Days in 2005. This album topped the charts in many countries and also won the band their first Grammy Award. This album also spawned many hit singles and saw the Gorillaz experimenting a bit more with their music and artwork. The latest Gorillaz album is Plastic Beach, an album that came out in 2010 and also opened to rave critical reviews like its predecessors. This album also marks the first time that the Gorillaz will be going on world tour.
Using holographic technology and some amazing artwork, the Escape from Plastic Beach Tour is most definitely going to be a totally unusual concert experience. The band will be touring all over Europe to America and Asia too so whichever part of the world you live in, get your Gorilla Tickets and prepare to be amazed!
