The duo conceived the idea of this unreal music band when they lived together in their London flat in 1998. The concept behind having a band made out of fictional members was to comment on the celebrity culture in the music business. The creators wanted to show that just good music can prosper and there is no need of attached celebrity or personalities that are famous just for being famous. The back stories of each band member are a sarcastic commentary on the way the music business works and the exaggerated expressions and stories are one of the biggest attractions of the band.

The band’s music is really Damon Albarn flexing his composing muscles. While Albarn was responsible for a lot of his old band Blur’s hits, he is in full control of the music made by the Gorillaz and is responsible for all musical endeavors of the band. The genre of the music created by this band cannot be specified as each album sees a bit of a shift in their musical style. The Gorillaz have released a total of three albums since their self-titled debut album in 2001. Gorillaz went on to sell 7 million copies worldwide and spawned a number of hit singles. The second outing for the band was with Demon Days in 2005. This album topped the charts in many countries and also won the band their first Grammy Award. This album also spawned many hit singles and saw the Gorillaz experimenting a bit more with their music and artwork. The latest Gorillaz album is Plastic Beach, an album that came out in 2010 and also opened to rave critical reviews like its predecessors. This album also marks the first time that the Gorillaz will be going on world tour.
