Gojira was founded in Bayonne, France in 1996. Initially the name was Godzilla but later in 2001 it was changed to Gojira. The band lineup since has not changed and it consists of the main founder brothers drummer Mario Duplantier and rhythm guitarist Joe Duplantier. Other two members are bassist Jean-Michael Labadie and lead guitarist Christian Andreu. The band since debut has focused on a mix variety of metal music such as groove, thrash and progressive metal. Initially Gojira released demos during the late 90’s including Saturate, Possessed and Victim.
During this time the group had a chance to open for other popular metal bands like Impaled Nazarene, Immortal and Edge of Insanity. The band has an exclusive contract with Listenable Records in France. Prosthetic Records was the international label through which the band released two studio albums but since the last album Gojira is signed music giant Roadrunner Records. The band cites famous metal bands like Pantera Death, Sepultura, Morbid Angel and Metallica as major influences.
The debut album by Gojira was released in 2001 and it was titled Terra Incognita. This album failed to get the attention of metal fans. Gojira managed to release another studio album named The Link in 2003 followed by the third album in 2005 called From Mars to Sirius. The group managed to gain attention of mainstream audience with From Mars to Sirius as it became the first ever album that entered the France charts at #44. The years 2006 and 07 were busy ones for the band as they toured across the US and UK with different bands like Annihilator, Children of Bodom, Lamb of God, Beneath the Massacre and Job for a Cowboy.
In 2008 Gojira released the fourth album The Way of All Flesh that proved to be a major success. This album was the first effort by the group that received international recognition by entering charts in France, Finland and the US. The Way of All Flesh landed at #25 on Finish, #138 on US Billboard and it also raced to the #1 slot on US Top Heatseekers charts. Lamb of God singer Randy Blythe recorded on of the tracks of this album as a guest singer.
In 2009 Gojira went on a US tour as a headlining band with groups like Car Bomb and The Chariot. In the same year the band also had the privilege of accompanying acclaimed metal group Metallica on a tour. In 2012 Gojira released L’Enfant Sauvage, this was the fifth studio album by the band but the first one to be released by Roadrunner Records. This was appreciated by both the critics as well as the fans, it became the highest charting album as it landed at #44 in France and #34 on Billboard. This was also the first album that entered the UK and Norway charts at #53 and #12 respectively.
Gojira can be rightfully called the Godzilla of metal music. Now the group is getting more worldwide recognition and a clear proof of this is that its last albums has charted in a number of countries. Gojira Announce North American Tour
French heavy metal band Gojira is all set to launch their headlining North American tour.
The musicians will be making stops in cities including Anaheim, Spokane, Santa Cruz and Berkeley. Joining them on the road as special guests will be ONI and Pallbearer. During the summer, Gojira will also join Metallica as the supporting act for the WorldWired Tour 2017.
Gojira will be promoting their album ‘Magma’ as part of the tour. It is the metal troops’ sixth studio record. Released in June of 2016, the album reached the 24th spot on the Billboard 200.
