Hansard’s Early Years
Hansard was born in Dublin, Ireland, on April 21, 1970. He took to music from an early age and quit school at the age of 13 to become a musician. In his own words,
In my house, when I was a kid, there was the holy trinity, which was Leonard Cohen, Van Morrison, and Bob Dylan with Bob sitting center.
Hansard founded The Frames in 1990. The band is one of the most successful rock bands in the Dublin rock music scene. The Frames has released 11 studio albums, out of which their debut album, Another Love Song was released in 1991. The band’s latest album, Longitude was released in 2015 and The Frames have not released another album since. Some of the band’s chart topping singles include Keepsake, Santa Maria, Sad Songs, Listen Girl, Star Star, Mind’s Made Up, Fake, People Get Ready and Falling Slowly.
The Swell Season
As mentioned above, Glen Hansard is also part of The Swell Season. The folk- rock band is actually a duo consisting of Hansard and Czech singer and pianist Markéta Irglová. The duo has released three studio albums and seven singles. Their albums are titled, The Swell Season, Once Soundtrack and Strict Joy.
The Swell Season was released in 2006 and one of its singles, Falling Slowly was nominated for the Grammy and the Academy Award in the Best Original Song category. It won the Academy Award in 2008.
In 2007, the duo released the soundtrack of the film, Once. The soundtrack was nominated for a variety of awards, including two Grammy Awards. It won the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award for Best Music. The Entertainment Weekly listed it at No.2 on its list of 25 New Classic Soundtrack Albums (1983-2008).
Strict Joy, the duo’s third and latest album, has been its most successful. Released in 2009 in Ireland, it reached No.15 on the Billboard 200. One of the singles from the album, In These Arms was released on iTunes and became one of the most downloaded songs.
Glen Hansard’s Solo Work
In addition to being in two bands, there is one other hat that Hansard wears, that of a solo artist. As a solo artist, he has released two albums, titled Rhythm and Repose and Didn’t He Ramble.
Released in 2012, Rhythm and Repose was Hansard’s debut solo album. A commercial hit as well as a critically acclaimed album, it peaked at No.3 on the Irish Albums chart. Allmusic gave it three stars. Rhythm and Repose sold more than 77,000 copies in the US alone by 2015.One of the singles from the album, Come Away to the Water was covered by Maroon 5 and Rozzi Crane on the soundtrack for The Hunger Games.
Didn’t He Ramble was released in 2015 and like Hansard’s debut album, too, reached No.3 on the Irish Albums chart. A blockbuster, Didn’t He Ramble was nominated for the Grammy Awards in the Best Folk Album category. The Rolling Stone magazine gave it three stars, while AllMusic gave the album four stars. Some of the hit singles from the album were Stay the Road, Lowly Deserter, Winning Streak and Wedding Ring.
