Gladys was born in 1944 in Atlanta, Georgia as Gladys Maria Knight born to Merald Woodlow Knight and Sara Elizabeth. At the age of seven she won an amateur TV contest in 1952 hosted by Ted Mack which was called Original Amateur Hour. At an early age she formed her own band called The Pips which consisted of Gladys, Brenda her sister and cousins Elenor and William Guest. After a decade the band also started doing tours and Elenor and Brenda were replaced by Langston George and Edward Patten. During the past years Gladys Knight has been under contract with different famous music labels like MCA Records, Verve, Buddha Records, Motown and Columbia Records.
Some of Gladys singles were global hits during the 1960’s and 70’s. The first album of Gladys and Pips that charted was Everybody Needs Love, it was released in 1967 and landed on # 60 on Billboard Charts and #12 on US R&B Charts. After this album Gladys all albums never missed the Charts and always landed on a respectable position. In 1968 came two albums Feelin Bluesy and Silk n Soul, both these album did well on charts and were at #12 and #11 respectively on US R&B Charts. Then came If I Were Your Woman in 1971 this was the band's best effort since debut as it went to #4 slot in US R&B Charts and at #35 on US Billboard Charts.
Neither One of Us and Imagination were released in 1972 and 73 respectively and both landed on the same position #9 on US Billboard and#1 on US R&B Charts. Imagination was Gladys first ever album that was certified Gold, since then four more album were certified Gold and they were I Feel a Song (1974), 2nd Anniversary (1975), Visions (1983) and All Our Love (1987). Gladys Knight has a long list of hit singles to her name such as “I heard it Through the Grapevine” (#2 on US Billboard and #1 on US R&B Charts), “The Nitty Gritty” (#2 on US R&B and #19 on US Billboard Charts), “Neither one of Us (Wants to be the First to Say Goodbye)” (#1 US R&B and #2 on Billboard), “Midnight Train To Georgia” (#1 on both US Billboard and R&B #19 on US Adult Contemporary and #10 on UK Charts) and “The Way We Were/Try To Remember” (#11 on US Billboard, #6 on US R&B, #4 on UK Charts and #2 on US Adult Contemporary).
Gladys Knight was inducted in the prestigious Georgia Music Hall of Fame in 1989 and in 1996 she was inducted in the prestigious Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. She has won along with her band Pips seven Grammy Awards and seven American Music Awards. Gladys Knights was awarded a star on the prestigious Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles California and was awarded a Life Time Achievement Award from Bet Cable Network in 2005. She also has a promising acting career and has acted in programs like The Jamie Foxx Show, New York Undercover, Benson, Living Single and A Different World. She also had cameo appearances on series like 30 Rock and Las Vegas.
