Girl Talk the Band is as varied as any band can get both in terms of music and its distinctive name. It is a one person band comprising of Gregg Michael Gillis, a Pittsburg native. He is a musician of a different kind. He is a master of mash ups and digital sampling. He listens and enjoys different songs like we all do and later combine and matches them to produce completely unique compositions. This is something one of its kinds and could have happened only in this technology savvy era. He blends the music and turns it into something different, ear-pleasing and out of this world. The listener keeps wondering how can you combine beats of different genres as this man has done. He usually samples each song in different combinations and then chooses the most interesting combo. According to him, when he listens to various songs he likes diverse aspects of them. Such as he likes lyrics of one song, the melody of another and beats of some other song. He then mashes them up to create something totally new.
Girl Talk the Band is a brainchild of Gregg Michael Gillis. He started making music with a friend of his when he was still in High School. After few joint efforts, he decided to start his solo project with the name Girl Talk. He continued with his work while as a student of biomedical engineering at Case Western Reserve University in Ohio. He also worked as an engineer but later quit that job to pursue his music career. His blending and remixing of music, lyrics, beats and notes have earned him special place in the music industry. Different people have varied views about his music. The New York Times Magazine has describes his music as “a lawsuit waiting to happen”. Gillis ascribed this as the negative role of media and said that they are just trying to create controversy which in reality does not exist. The name of his solo band is also quite controversial. He has given different explanations of the name on different occasions. He has attributed the name to an early site project “Merzbow” and also to a poem by Jim Morris. Recently he said that it was inspired from a grunge band with the name TAD from Seattle. In a more thorough interview he told that the name is inspired by many things and it is basically a pop culture word. As per him, the name is totally the opposite of a man playing music via his laptop.
Girl Talk the Band has gained many recognitions and awards throughout its career. In 2007, the band received “Rave Award” from the magazine “Wired”. His album “Feed the Animals” was on number 4 among the “Top Ten Albums of 2008”, according to the Times Magazine. The listeners of NPR rated it as the “16th best album of the year”. He was honored by the people of his native city Pittsburg, Penny Silvia who celebrated December 7, 2010 as “Gregg Gillis Day”. He has also appeared in different documentaries. He has appeared in “Good Copy Bad Copy” which is about the present day situation of copyright culture. He is highlighted greatly in “RiP!!! A Remix Manifesto”, a 2008 open source documentary. To date, he has released five albums. In 2002, his CD “Secret Art” was released, followed by “Unstoppable” in 2004, “Night Ripper” in 2006, “Feed the Animals” in 2008 and “All Day” in 2010. All his albums have been released by “Illegal Arts”. His two EP’s include “Stop Cleveland Hate” and “Bone Hard Zagging” released in 2004 and 2006 respectively. He once revealed to “Triple J” that he uses “Adobe Audition” and “Audio Mulch” software to create his songs.
